Seeking Birthplace & Parents of Bridget Cane (b. 1870, emigrated 1887)

Hello,

I’m seeking help identifying the birthplace and correct surnames of Bridget Cane and both of her parents (Keane, Kean, Kane, Keene, or Keen). Bridget was born in Ireland c. January 1870 and emigrated to the USA in 1887, per census records. This research is for my husband’s family. She is my brick wall.

Information

  • Birth Name: Bridget Cane
  • Name from c 1887 to 1893/4 Bridget Barrett
  • Name from 1893/4 to 1919: Bridget Van Deurs
  • Death Record Name: Bridget Truska (1933, New York, attached)
  • Religious Denomination: Roman Catholic
  • Place of Birth: Ireland (family believes Northern Ireland; DNA supports Ulster & Northern Ireland region)
  • Parents (from attached death record): John Cane and Mary Breslin (spellings uncertain)
  • Child: George Van Deurs (b. 12 Dec 1894, Brooklyn, NY)
  • Emigration: Arrived in USA 1887 (1888 on one census)

Marriage History

  • Likely married a Mr. Barrett in the USA before 1893 (no record found; may explain surname used in family stories)
  • Married Christian Charles Wilson Van Deurs c.1893–94 (he later returned to Denmark)
  • Married Martin E. Truska in 1919 (license lists her as Bridget B. Van Deurs; full record not found)

Research Already Done

I’ve searched IrishGenealogy.ie, Ancestry, FamilySearch, NY Genealogical Records, Find A Grave, and Geni. I’ve located U.S. census, marriage, and death records. Immigration and Irish records are difficult due to name variations and lack of parents listed.

What I’m Hoping to Learn

The correct surnames for her parents

Where in Ireland she and her parents were born (parish/townland/county)

Carol,

Something to keep in mind is that the person who reported her death, her husband, might not have known her mother's correct surname. This error is not uncommon in death certificates. Another thought is this...are you certain that she married someone named Barrett? While looking for a birth record on the paid site, Roots Ireland, I came across this record that shows the mother's maiden name as Barrett... I could not locate any mother named Breslin. Could it be that the "surname used in family stories" is her mother's?

Bridget Kean, baptism: 1 Mar 1868, residence Keel, RC parish Achill, Mayo. Parents: John Kean & Mary Barrett, sponsors: Pat Barrett & Nancy Barrett.

Regards,

Carolyn

Thank you for helping! I really appreciate it.

When it comes to Bridget, I am unsure if she married before Van Deurs. I have been looking for her using Barrett as well. It would be helpful If I could find her marriage record to a Barrett or Van Deurs.

While Mr. Truska provided the information, her son would have been there as well. With that being said... I have seen sons give wrong maternal names on death certificates as well.

Her birth month had been consistent as January throughout the USA census records. I wish I had the day of birth, it would help narrow down my search. As you can see, they never entered that information on the death record.

Unfortunately, the family has no information about her. Bridget's granddaughter remembers visiting the grave of Bridget Truska and never knew it was her grandmother, Bridget Van Deurs. All she remembers is her mother saying Bridget Truska was not a nice woman. The granddaughter was shocked to learn it was her father's mother.

Thank you, again, for helping.

Carol:

The surname Breslin in the mid-19th century was primarily found in Co. Donegal which supports the DNA results showing Ulster/Northern Ireland. I searched for records for Bridget but did not find any good leads.

Carol,

I would not focus on the month of January as  her birth month even though she self-reported it. Many folks during that period did not know their birth dates as we do now..no official documentation was carried with them upon emigration. I have seen in my own research that January was recorded for the birth month, and later I discovered the baptism record that showed differently. My guess is that immigrants chose that month as it was the first in the year and easy to remember.

Thank you. Carolyn. I will keep that in mind.

Since your first message, I started using all the surnames as her maiden name in the hopes of finding a breadcrumb somewhere.

I have already searched Van Deurs and Truska in hope of finding something in their records, but I cannot.

There are times I fear she will never be found.

Thank you again!

Followup question: Would a child be given the maternal surname as a middle name?

Could Barrett be the mother's surname and Bridget's full name be Bridget Barrett Cane?

I am trying to explore all avenues.

cmheppner

Carol,

I highly doubt that was the case because middle names did not become popular in Ireland until about 20 years after she was born. If you look at civil or church records around 1870, very few were given middle names; and if there were any, it would not be a surname.

Regards,

Carolyn

Thank you.

DNA results and traditional genealogical research shows Bridget's father was John Barrett and her mother was Mary Breslin. In addition to Bridget, they also had sons, John, who was born in 1865, and Robert Barrett born  1861.

cmheppner

It seems they were from County Mayo.
