Searching link Michael Carey to Cary of Redcastle, Inishowen
I am a direct male-line descendant of Michael Carey (born c. 1795) who married Margaret Ryan in St. Munchin’s, Limerick, in 1818. I am seeking a Y-DNA comparison or paper-trail connection to the Cary family of Redcastle, Inishowen, Donegal.
Evidence for the Link:
While Michael was based in Limerick, he utilized a very specific naming pattern for his sons that mirrors the Redcastle gentry. After naming his first two sons Thomas (1820) and Peter (1823), his subsequent sons were named Michael, George, Edward, and William. The names George, Edward, and William are 'signature names' that were used consistently for four generations by the descendants of George Cary (1589–1640) of Redcastle.
Based on naming conventions, I suspect Michael’s father was a Thomas Carey (born c. 1760–1775) who may have moved south from Ulster due to military service or trade.
I am currently investigating the capabilities of the Y-DNA test. I am looking for:
- Any male-line descendants of the Redcastle/Inishowen Carys who have already tested (specifically the Devon/Donegal branch).
- Any record of a Thomas Cary/Carey from the Donegal line who relocated to the Limerick/Munster area in the late 18th century.
If you are knowledgeable of the Devon/Donegal Cary lineage or have research on the younger sons of the Redcastle branch, I would be very interested in comparing data.
Thanks in advance
Bob Carey
