Searching for Information on my grandmother, Elizabeth Grennan born possibly near Frenchpark County Roscommon 1875-1880

I have just started exploring my Irish grandparents roots even though I dont have a lot of information pertaining to them because my father passed away when I was three. As I remember hearing from oral history, My grandmother Elizabeth Grennan was born in Ireland between 1875 - 1880 possibly in Roscommon, and potentially near an area around Frenchpark. Her parents were Bernard Grennan and Catherine Callahan (I dont have any information on them either.) Elizabeth emigrated to the US and arrived in New York City although I cannot find any reference to her arrival. As I understand it, she worked as a maid for the Vanderbilts and married my grandfather John Manning in New York in 1904. I have a copy of their marriage certificate which lists Elizabeths parents although the certificate did not include Elizabeths age. The 1910 US federal census indicated that she was around 33 years old. Elizabeth was widowed in 1912 and her name was changed to Elizabeth Mannion. She raised my father and his two brothers and passed away in Queens New York around 1950.

Any information pertaining to Elizabeth Grennan (and her parents) or leads on how best to pursue that information would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Elizabeth was actually born in 1869. Below is a transcription of her baptismal record. They lived in Ballinagare or Bellanagare https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bellanagare  I also copied a link to the 1869 civil record. You will have to sign-in to see the record. looks like she had a sister Mary or Margaret born 1865, a brother Peter 1867 and a sister Catherine Mary in 1872. I will look for census records.

Roger -

Outstanding research!  I remember my mom telling me that her mother in law had  mentioned Roscommon and Ballinagare.... now I know why.  You probably don't have any records pertaining to Elizabeth towards the end of the 1800s because she emigrated to the US.  I have a screenshot of a passenger list with an Eliza Grennan arriving in NY around 1880 when her age is listed as 9.  Not sure, though, if its my grandmother.

Perhaps you could give me some leads on how best to find out information on my great grandparents Bernard Grennan and Catherine Callaghan.  Until I obtain my grandmother's wedding certificate, I didn't even know their names so I have no information on them.  Any information would be appreciated.

Thanks again for getting back to me and I look forward to further discoveries of my Irish ancestors.

I searched for a marriage record with no success. Marriages normally occurred in the bride's parish and if Catherine was from a different parish which does not have records back to the early 1860s that could explain not finding a record. I also looked at the 1855 Griffiths Valuation records and there were two Grennan records (Edward and Patrick) in Cloontowart townland in Tibohine civil parish which includes Bellanagare. http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/roscommon/tibohine.htm    There were also many Callaghan records in the parish.
