Searching for Collins/Reids before they emigrated to Scotland in later 1800's

I'm hitting a brick wall when I try to locate my maternal great grands.  In the 1901 census for Rutherglen, Lanarkshire, Scotland I see my great grandmother and great grandfather.  My GGM and likely GGF seem to be from County Tyrone.

Mary Reid (nee Collins)

Born around 1859

County Tyrone, Ireland

Robert Reid

Born around 1856

Ireland (no county)

Their oldest son, James who was 16 in 1901, is listed as born in England.  All subsequent listed children are born in Rutherglen, Lanarkshire, including my grandfather.  I believe they were Catholic as my grandmother had to convert to Catholicism to marry my grandfather.

Even looking through records from Scotland, this side of the family is fairly elusive when searching for births, marriages and deaths.

Cailin,

I think Robert Read (sic) married Mary Collins on 2nd Sept 1882 in Skelmersdale, Lancs. That marriage certificate should give you their father's names and occupations. I think Mary was married before. Maiden name may have been Mallee or Malley (or similar). 1882 marriage looks to have been registered in Ormskirk, Jun - Sept quarter, Volume 8b, page 1131. You can order a copy of that from GRO Southport. Takes about 2 weeks.

What looks to be daughter Rose Ann is showing in the Scottish birth indexes for Rutherglen 1899 with mother's maiden name Maller & Mallee. Son Robert was born Rutherglen 1902 mmn Mallee.

Have you found the couple in the 1911 or 1921 Scottish censuses? Either may give a more specific place of birth in Ireland.

Cailin,

Adding to my previous message, I found Mary Reid ms Mallee in the 1911 Scottish census for Rutherglen. Her place of birth is given as England. So apparently not born in Tyrone.

You may note she had had 13 children of which only 7 were still alive.

Elwyn,

Thank you so much!  This information is very helpful and will hopefully get me on the right track.  I had heard Mary was English, and I hadn't search all the different spellings of Reid.  I appreciate your quick response.

Cailin
