Searching for Foley ancestors from Eskine, Sneem, Kenmare, Kerry

I am trying to track down the parish and detials for my grandfather John Foley who I was told was born in Eskine. I have done some digging already and have included what I have so far. I am planning a trip to Ireland in the near future and would greatly appreciate any tips or advice on how to find out more and/or possibly connect with some of the Foley clan when I'm in Kerry.

My father, John Joseph Foley, was born in New York City on February 20, 1922 to John Foley and Sarah Nicholson. My dad's father, John Foley was born in 1885, came from a large family. I believe there were eleven children only one or two were girls. I know that one of the boy's was named Humphrey; I remember that name because it didn't seem very Irish. I'm sure there must have been a Timothy, Daniel, Sean and there was a Kathleen who emigrated to New York City as did most of the siblings. My dad once told me that his father and seven or eight brothers emigrated to New York "one step ahead of the law". My dad seemed to imply it was during "The Troubles".

I don't know how manyof the Foley children emigated, their names or the dates that they lelft Ireland. I do however know the details for my grandfather, John Foley; he sailed from Liverpool on the Saint Paul and arrived in New York on September 30, 1915. He was single when he arrived and married Sarah once he was in America. I don't know what town or county Sarah was from. Sarah was born in 1892 and had immagrated in 1911. John and Sarah must have married shortly after he arrived in New York because in the 1920 census they already had a five year old son, my uncle, Timothy.

I never met either of my father's parents they had both passed away before I was born. The only members of my dad's family I ever knew were his brothers and their families. I once met Martin Slaterly in New York City who may have been married to my father's aunt Kathleen. For all the Foley's who emigrated to America I just have to be a lot of relatives all around the county and we're all looking to migrate back to Ireland to escape Donald Trump!

Anyway I would love to get some help tracking down my roots at least to know more about where my grandfather was born and and maybe hear some clan stories over a pint of Guiness in Eskine.

Thanks in advance for whatever help you can offer.

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Eskine is in Kilcorhane civil parish. I located the likely 1901 census record for the family and John was shown as 19 pointing to an 1881 year of birth. Four children are shown so I assume many of the older children had left. The second record is likelyn a brother Jeremiah living with his wife and two children in Eskine. The third record is the 1911 census record where John's mother is alone (Jeremiah and his family were still in Eskine. Timothy had died in 1904 from throat cancer. See last record. You will need to sign-in. i could not find a death record for Catherine/Kate 1911 or after.

I looked for a civil birth record for John but could not find one. I did locate Humphry's record in 1884. See fourth record below. The maiden name for Catherine was Sullivan.

Update: I did more searching on www.irishgenealogy.ie and found John's baptismal record in 1882 in Sneem. See below. I also found a possible marriage record for Timothy and Catherine in 1864. Last record below.

By the way, John left before the Troubles which started in 1916 and really picked up in 1919.

Questions?

Wow thank you for such a fast reply with such a wealth of information. It's a lot for me to digest. Let me study everything and I will get back to you if I have any more questions. I'm not too surprised that the tales of the “Irish Troubles” were a bit of colorful Blarney passed along from father to child.

I do have an immediate set of related questions I hope you might be able to help me with. I have been researching the feasibility of applying to become an Irish citizen. I found the Embassy of Ireland-Great Britain website it included a section entitled "Foreign Births Registration - Guidelines for Applicants Resident in Great Britain". The website says “You can become an Irish citizen if one of your grandparents was born in Ireland. . .” It describes several eligibility options. One of the options listed is to claim through a parent who is an Irish citizen through "A parent born in Ireland".

So first question, from the section title should I assume only people residing in Great Britain would be eligible to apply? Does it mean as a citizen of and/or residing in the US I would not be eligible to apply regardless my parentage? Is there perhaps another website that covers eligibility for people of or residing in other countries?

Second if there is a path to Irish citizenship for a US citizen through parentage how could I confirm whether I would be eligible? If I am to track down documentation for my grandfather's birth in Ireland would his son, my father, who was born in New York have been considered an Irish citizen at birth?

Just for fun, I've uploaded a couple of photos one is of my dad as a baby with John and Sarah and older brother Timothy (1923) and one of my dad 1945 in New York home on leave from the Air Force and there is one more picture of my dad on the World War II Monument website https://goo.gl/P3ZEH0  Maybe someone in Ireland will recognize his likeness in a friend or family member in Kerry. The last photo I uploaded is of me with my dad and mom; it was taken Christmas 2006. My dad passed away 4 months later at 85; my mom at 96 is still going stong.

Chris:

I noticed a typo in the first line of my response. The civil parish is Kilcrohane.

I would use this link for information on applying for Irish citizenship  https://www.dfa.ie/irish-consulate/newyork/our-services/citizenship/bor…

The process is not limited to Great Britian. A USA citizen can apply. I live in the USA and applied for my Irish citizenship a number of years ago and successfully got through the process. The process is complicated and you need a lot of proofs and I don't know what the fee is now but likely it is expensive.

Your father could have claimed Irish citizenship through his father (and I assume he did not) but that does not allow your request to be fast-tracked. The fact that we can't locate a civil birth record for John may be a complication for you.

We have a web site called XO Chronicles where you can post information about your grandfather or other ancestors.

Hi Chris, I am also related to this Foley family, too.  Hello Foley cousin!

My father's grandmother in NY was Bridget Marie Foley who married Thomas McGovern.  Both were immigrants, and Bridget was from a Foley family in Eskine Sneem.  I need to go back to my tree and look at all of the information that was posted here, and if I am lucky that you find this post these several years later, I would love to hear from you and whether you found family in Ireland.

The Catherine Sullivan mentioned in these posts, appears to be the reason that there are people who are related via both of my great grandparents' families.  I believe that her first husband died and she remarried and had additional children.  I don't have full proof yet, but I suspect that my two Catherine Sullivans in Sneem are the same person, and that descendants from both of her offspring families eventually married, connecting the families full-circle many generations later.

My great grandmother, Bridget Marie Foley was born ~ 1870 and her parents were Timothy Foley and Catherine Sullivan, b. ~1838 and ~1846, respectively.  Timothy's father was Darby Foley and his mother was Catherine Cleary.

If you receive this and would like to compare notes, please feel free to reach out: Colleen.GenRes@gmail.com.  I will post/share a photo with you of Bridget that I have handy.

Hi Chris & Colleen,

My father in law, Thomas Fitzgerald was the son of Annie Foley.  Her parents were Timothy Foley and Catherine Sullivan. I'd love to compare notes.   i don't have much info.

Hi Patrick,

Nice to meet a cousin (married in, it looks like)! I will share below what I have found on this branch of the family.  If you have more on the Fitzgerald side, please let me know. While I do not have a lot of time in recent years for my ancestry research, do not hesitate to email me at Colleen.GenRes@gmail.com. I will eventually get back to you there, as well.

Note that much of the following was found online, and I am trusting resources from Ancestry.com and FamilySearch.org, as well as family trees that exist within those platforms. In some situations, I feel the  need to revisit and confirm some details. Note that dates being off a bit is not a huge concern if all else lines up, as often our Irish immigrants were illiterate to the degree of not knowing their birthdates, and sometimes, just like names, they changed them for reasons appropriate to their time and circumstances.

A man named Patrick Terry posted the attached photos of Fitzgerald and Foley on Ancestry.com about 10 years ago.
