Robert/Linda,
Thanks for the reply – sorry for the delay, I don’t log on here very often.
That’s disappointing news about your visit.
You say Anne Frewen had a son named Robert born in Geelong, Australia and that his father was James Foley. Do you know where he came in the family? Usual Irish naming patterns had first son named after father’s father, second son after mother’s father – you might have another clue..
The Catherine Frewen tombstone mentioned earlier, the mother of Robert Joseph Frewen, Glenview (Gortavoher) who is buried in the Oola cemetery was born 1806 Catherine Ryan, I’ve no info on her background. However, she might be from Oola – check for her marriage to Edmond Frewen in that parish. She also had other children, including a daughter Mary Ann of whom I know nothing. That branch of the Frewens is known as the ‘Glen’ Frewens to distinguish them from the ‘Barronstown’ Frewens of Limerick Junction (my branch). Other branches are the Frewens of Clonbeg, Roesborough, Rosbog, Mitchelstown and the original family from Castleconnell. Several of them have Australian emigrants. Unfortunately for researchers there are Roberts in all branches, going back to 1720. I’ve done some research on them– my Barronstown work is fully sourced but although I have gathered info on the other branches from others I have not verified much of it.
My grandfather, Robert Frewen, born 1895 maintained that the Carron and Glen Frewens were his cousins,- I’ve newspaper mentions of Glen Frewens as ‘cousin’ and he said they were related in the early 1800’s. However, I believe the link is earlier, c1770-1800.
Carron Frewens – Edmond of Carron married an Anne Lonergan 1860. He ‘might’ be the brother of Mary - 1854/2/20 Cork Examiner - At Carron on Tuesday by the Rev. John Frewen brother of the bride, William P Fennely, Esq. of Barnlough, Bansha, to Mary, Daughter of the late Robert Frewen of Carron. [This I think is the Fr. John Frewen who died in Louvain, Belgium.]
In 1835 there were two Robert Frewens at Carron who were entitled to vote (possibly father and son? An answer to your possible second marriage question?)
Edmond & Anne Lonergan of Carron also had a daughter Anne who died unmarried in Dublin in 1938. Their daughter Margaret married Peter Francis Ryan whose daughter Hannah Agnes (1872- 1928) married J K Bracken, parents of Brendan (Later Viscount) Bracken, a WW2 MP/First Lord of the Admiralty/Parliamentary Secretary to W.S. Churchill.
An Edmond Frewen was a PLG (Poor Law Guardian] for Tipperary who died of Famine Fever in 1847. I’m unsure if he is a Glen or a Carron Frewen, I think the latter, but newspaper reports are contradictory.
There is also a claim that the Carron family 'died out' (by which I infer died out in Ireland) in an undated letter John W. ‘Jack’ Frewen of Australia – wrote to my grandfather c1930 or late 1920s mentioning the family "....or they would have run their course like the Carron and Roseburo branch of that ilk." I know that the Roesboro family had to sell up and emigrate 1870’s – initially to the US, then some of the children again emigrated to Australia, some settling in South Africa en route.
I’ve a note that Edmond of Carron died age 55 in 1885 so DoB is c1830. Cause of death is 'dementia, paralysis 4 years certified' Even then that is unusually young for dementia so I’d verify the age/DoB.
Hope there is something in all of this that might lead somewhere,
Regards
Bob
