Searching for details on my Great Grand parents

Hi, I have just joined so I am a bit of a novice at this. I am trying to find any information on my Great Great Grand Parents, they are William Henry Talbot who I believed was from Toomyvara and Hannah Mary Watts possibly from Eccles St in the Parish of Booterstown.

They had 2 maybe 3 children, Robert Francis, Jean and possibly Samuel. Robert Francis is my Great Grandfather who was born around 1844, I cannot find any birth or Baptism for him. I also cant trace anything else on William and Hannah. All I have is possible dates William b, 1800 d. 1858 and Hannah b. 1820 d. 1846.

Robert Francis moved to Australia in 1872 and married Annie Rebbeca Mason (exUK). He died in 1935.

I have heard that Jean may have gone to Scotland (lanarkshire)

So if anyone can help me I would be most grateful

Thanks Rob59

quick note on the locations...  Toomyvara/Toomevara is in Co. Tipperary, Booterstown is a town and Civil parish in south County Dublin.

I dont know of an Eccles St. in Booterstown but there is one in Dublin North City.

Do you have any clues as to the denomination of this family or where Robert was born ?

My Dad and I were brought up in the Church of England, so I presume it was for Robert F .

There are conflicting places of birth. A search of the pay list for HMS Imaum for January 1851 to 1862 revealed a reference to one Robert Talbot who joined the ship in Jamaica on 5th October 1860 as a Commodore's domestic servant. He gave his place of birth as London, Middlesex, however, this was later to change to Tumavara, Tipperary, Ireland, when he became an Ordinary Seaman 2nd Class on 10th October 1860. This place and date of birth is recorded by his name in subsequent paylists. This was found out by a cousin of mine in Bath

His notice of marriage in the newspaper, On the 4th instant, at St. Philip's, by the Rev. Canon O'Reilly, ROBERT FRANCIS, of H.M.S. Clio, second son of WILLIAM TALBOT,     of Dublin, to ANNIE REBECCA MERCY, fifth daughter of JOHN MASON, late of this city.

This is the problem, I can't seem to find anything concrete.

The town of Toomevara is in the civil parish of Aghnameadle/Aghnamadle, and the Church of Ireland (also Anglican and equiv. to CofE) parish of the same name. Extract for the parish from Topographical Dictionary of Ireland, 1837 :

AGHNAMADLE, a parish, in the barony of Upper Ormond, county of Tipperary, and province of Munster, 85 miles (S.) from Moneygall, on the mail coach road from Limerick to Dublin    ...  The church is a small edifice, situated at Toomavara.

I dont see mention of surviving historic Church of Ireland registers for the parish, but will check in more detail later..

RootsIreland (pay-website) seems to have transcripts of Aghnameadle CofI records - back to 1834 for baptisms and marriage, also some headstone inscriptions for Toomevara/Aghnameadle.

Co. Tipperary is split in two areas for some record types, North and South Riding. Toomevara is in North Riding. Transcripts of several Talbot baptisms are included in the RootsIreland index for Tipperary North around 1844 (+/- 10) with father's name William, but none that I see named Robert.

Sorry for not getting back to you, work has been getting in the way. This is the problem I have been having all along. I just wish I had a copy of his baptism or birth. He also had a sister Jean who was born in 1839 and possibly a brother Samuel who may have gone to Canada. Jean moved to Lanackshire sometime in 1860's, 1870's.

Thanks for all you have done.

I'm wondering about that marriage newspaper notice you mentioned - especially the 'of Dublin'.  Did the marriage record for Robert mention his father's occupation ?

I'm wondering if Toomyvara might be a mistake, and actually be further back in time. If the family was Church of Ireland and he was baptised in Toomyvara then he doesn't seem to appear in the records, so ether he wasn't recorded, the page he was noted is damaged or his baptism didn't take place in Toomevara/Aghnameadle.

Do you have any further information on Jean ?

Finding details of her could help ....

Scottish Census returns might give details on where in Ireland she was born, and Scottish  Marriage and Death certs usually include details of parents. I'm not sure if they include parents address and details of whether deceased or not, but might be worth checking out. There's nothing likey showing for her baptism in the 5 years either side of 1839 on either RootsIreland or IrishGenealogy, so possibly they lived in an area where records dont go back far enough, or they lived in an area not covered by either site.

There is an interesting Dublin marriage on IrishGenealogy for a Samuel Talbot in St. Peter's CofI Parish in 1856. Father's name is William Henry Talbot, described as 'a Gentleman'. The Samuel Talbot is shown as a Printer & Stationer with an address of Athy in Co. Kildare.

see : marriage of Samuel Talbot and Kate Hunt

Dont know if the age fit's  'your' Samuel (born c1835 or earlier), but might be worth following up on the see in there are any later details on this Samuel that might show where he was born. He doesn't seem to appear on the 1901 Irish Census...

there are three daughters for that Talbot / Hunt couple listed in the FamilySearch extracted civil birth records collection. All in the sub-district of Athy, and between 1865 and 1868. Registration of Births commenced in 1864, so there could have been earlier children between the marriage and the birth of Gertrude. The details of the children might help follow this couple..

Gertrude Talbot - 18 January 1865
Josephine Mary Clare Talbot - 28 April 1867
Florence Emily Talbot - 4 October 1868

see : link

p.s this Samuel Talbot is listed in an 1870 directory as Bookseller, Stationer and Printer, with an address at Emily st, Athy. He doesn't appear in the 1881 edition, and there doesn't seem to be any sign of a likely death for him in the area, so could fit with the story of this family emigrating...

p.p.s. in 1881 there is a George W. Talbot, proprietor & publisher in Athy

On Robert's marriage certificate William has been written in as a Professor of Music, there is nothing for Hannah Mary.

I don't have any info on Jean except that possible birth date and the story that Robert Francis went to see her when he left the navy to return to Australia. Samuel is just a name that my late cousin had found in his research of the family.

The birth recards of Robert are all very mixed up, Info from another cousin.  "He gave his place of birth as London, Middlesex, however, this was later to change to Tumavara, Tipperary, Ireland, when he became an Ordinary Seaman 2nd Class on 10th October 1860. This place and date of birth is recorded by his name in subsequent paylists". On his death certificate his place of birth is Malahide, Dublin, Ireland.

In a memoir written by Frank Young, presumuably taken from Roberts memoirs he writes " Robert Francis Talbot was born at Malahide, Dublin in 1844 the second son of William Henry Talbot a Professor  of Music, and Hannah Talbot, nee Watts" futher on he writes " At this time HMS Clio and her crew had concluded their stint of 3 years of duty as flagship for the Australian Station and departed for England where on her arrival at Sheerness, her crew were paid off. Robert Talbot visited his sister Jean then living at Lanack, Scotland and severed old family ties He returned to Australia aboard the Jerusalem on the 5th April 1874.

Also in his notes he stated that his Father died in c.1856 in Ireland but doesn't say where. I have also heard that Hannah died in 1845 and that William may have remarried but this has never been confirmed. It is such a grey area and most irritating.

That is about all I have from his life before Australia. I have been through everything I have

Malahide is in north Co. Dublin, not exactly close to Balbriggan abt 20km, but just at least it's the same general area, and closer than the other locations. The father's profession could be useful - that's a very distinctive occupation, and the kind that would be included in Directories. I'll have search and let you know..

p.s. I'll will check what CofI records exist for Malahide

Hi, It hs been 4 years since I last looked into the info on my Great grandfather, Life in general has got in the way. Did you have any luck with the Cofl records? I understand if you haven't had any time or whatever to look.

Regards

Rob

Church of Ireland parish records for Malahide go back to the 1820s and are held by the Represenative Church Body Library. Records for this parish are not currently available online anywhere that I know of.

I just had another look through directories and found an interesting item - it mentions a placename which you mentioned in your original post way back in 2014.

William H. Talbot esq., 42 Eccles St Dublin City

source Thom's Directory of 1848. No mention of being a professor of Music...

In the same directory index there's also an entry for a Henry W. Talbot with an address at Williamstown which is near Booterstown Co. Dublin - maybe his details were crossed with your William somewhere along the line ?
