Searching for Cahill Family in Roscommon

RoscommonBaslick (Roscommon)Fuerty (Roscommon)Kilkeevin (Roscommon)Killukin Boyle (Roscommon)Termonbarry (Roscommon)Tibohine (Roscommon)

I am trying to find my 4th Great-Grandfather, John Cahill's, family line in Ireland. I seem to have most of my DNA matches in the Roscommon area.

John Cahill was born about 1760 in Ireland and immigrated to America, date unknown. We do not know exactly when or where he was born. The first documented mention of him in America was in 1775 when he was awarded a contract to paint the county courthouse. He settled in Reed Creek, Virginia, and married Dianah Garner in 1789. They had 10 children, in the following order: Nancy, Edward Peregrine (Perry), Thomas, John, Susannah, Mary (Polly), Nathaniel, Dianah, Maria and Sallie. He died 1 April 1817.

I would greatly appreciate any guidance or help anyone might be able to offer to help me connect to his family line in Ireland to, hopefully, learn more about him and his family. Thank you. Denise Shaw / dmcshaw@gmail.com

Denise:

There are no church records for Co. Roscommon that go back to 1760 so we won't find a record for John Cahill.

Your best hope is to find a match to someone who was descendant of a sibling to John Cahill. There then may be some records to point out where in the county your Cahills came from.

The Tithe listings from the 1820s/1830s show five different civil parishes where Cahills lived Co. Roscommon in that time period. There were likely other Cahill families who did not appear in the Tithes becasue they had very small holdings or were labourers.

Hi Denise

The 1749 Elphin Census suggests you can limit your search to the following parishes in Co Roscommon:

Baslick, Drumcliff, Fuerty, Kilkeevin, Kilcooley, Kilbride, Tibohine, Termonbarry. (Please join each of these parishes on IrelandXO).

You may also need to keep an out for the spelling variations Call/ Coyl/ Coil.

Hope this helps.

I found my husband's Cahill's in South Tumna parish Roscommon.  They also appear as Cahalan and Cahalin. His DNA is on Ancestry. Descendants who came to US settled in Albany NY and CT.

Thank you for your response. Family lore says two Cahill brothers came over together, but we do not know the name of his brother or where he settled in the USA. Can you tell me your brother's ancestry user name so I can see if he is on my DNA match list? Also, can you tell me the name of the descendants who settled in Albany NY and CT and the date they came to the US so I can search family trees? My ancestry user name is dmcshaw or Denise Shaw. My email is Dmcshaw @ Gmail.com. Thank you.

I have dna connection between Cahalan,Tonemace, Annaghdown, Galway and Cahill and Cahalin in Cootehill, Drumsillagh, Roscommon.  Some went to Albany,  New York, US

Hi, Heather. Thanks for the information. Do you, or any of your family members, have DNA posted in Gedmatch or ancestry . com? I’d love to be able to see if we have a DNA connection. Do you have a family tree posted anywhere that I could view? Do you know the names of the family members who settled in Albany, NY? I’d love to be able to explore this line for potential connections. Thank you.

Hi Denise, I have DNA connections on Ancestry but no direct line connecting which is why I have been trying to widen connection circles between like people. You may have read Irish history/lore/myth regarding Spanish King Milesius, his son marrying into Irish tribes resulting in names Cahalan and Cahill. Until recently after years of research I came across the connection between the two surnames because of dna . It is all very vague but would appear to show that the two surnames are connected. I am away for a day or two but you can look at my CahalinCahalan family under Dolby Tree, HABaldwin but this only shows family to about 1800..Do you show

connection with Linda.?  Do you have tree on Ancestry I can look at?  Speak some more.

Heather
