The search for Alice Healy

Good day,

I am looking for my grandmother, Alice Healy. Daughter to John Healy and Kate Healy. Kates maiden name is Finneran (not sure on the spelling).

Alice was born 23rd of December 1891 in Lismaha. Birth registered district; Athleague. The registers name was J. Ryan. Registered In January 1892.

We have Alice's birth cert. We have no record of where she got married. We have her death report and we believe her husbands death report. George A. Cummins. They died in Rooderpoort, South Africa.

I am going to visit Roscommon this weekend and just came across this page. I have been searching for her for a very long time. I have spoken with other family members but nobody has as much information as I have on her. Which I know is not a lot.

Any information would be of great help.

Thank you

Stephanie,

I am wondering if Alice's mother's name is Finnegan. If so, her father was a coachman/ groom. Per RootsIreland, she had 8 siblings- Martin 1874, Mary Ann 1876, Honora 1877, Catherine 1880, Patrick 1882, Eleanor 1884, John 1886, Brigid 1889

Stephanie,

I searched on Roots Ireland because it is easy to find the children of a couple, but you can also pull up these records on irishgenalogy.ie for free.

I think that in the birth record for Alice, her mother's name was incorrectly spelled...yes, it looks to be Finneran, but I think it was actually Finnigan (Finnegan, Finigan, Finegan).

I found a marriage record for her parents as well as eight siblings for Alice....IF this is not her family, then she was an only child.

Here is the info:

John Healy & Catherine Finnegan, residences both were Mountalbot, married 2 Oct 1873, RC parish Dysart/Tisrara. His occupation was servant, he was 30 years old and Catherine was 24. John's father - Martin (dead) & Catherine's father - Jeremiah.

Siblings: Martin, 11 Jul 1874, Mountalbot,Tisrara, father's occupation - groom

Mary Anne, 22 Mar 1876, same residence, father's occupation - coachman

               Honor, 29 Jun 1876,            "                                                               "

               Catherine, 25 Apr 1880,        "                                                              "

               Patrick, 22 Mar 1882,          "                                                                "

               Eleanor, 10 Sep 1884, residence - Lisgillilea, Tisrara,                         "

               John, 24 Aug 1886,                              "                                                 "

Bridgid, 4 Sep 1888, residence - Lismaha                                         groom & coachman

Alice, 23 Dec 1891, residence - Lismaha                                          small farmer

It appears that her father's job took them to different residences, and he finally "retired" from his coachman's job.

I looked for a marriage record for Alice, but did not find one.

Regards,

MaryTV,

You beat me to it! :) How do you copy and paste from Roots Ireland? I didn't think that was possible.

Carolyn

carolyntoohey@…

I think its ok to do? I click on the left side of my mouse, drag across record, and usually a copy symbol appears or I click on the right side of mouse and click on copy.

Perhaps John's death record in 1907.

Thank you Marty & Carolyn, this is great!

The info you sent shows Alices exact birth date and I wouldn’t imagine too many Alice’s in that area with the exact birth date. I have uploaded a document here with Alices birth cert and some other info

You mentioned Alice’s father was a coachman. on her birth certificate it says he was a ‘’small farmer’’. I guessing that just changed.

Excuse my ignorance about her mother’s name as Catherine but on Alice’s birth cert it is Kate. Does that matter?

We cannot find anything on Alice’s marriage and we wonder if she got married in South Africa to George. I thought it would be strange for a women to travel unmarried on her own at that time?

We will definitely visit Mount Talbot when there as well.

Stephanie,

He probably farmed a bit of land after his career as a coachman/groom....it didn't necessarily have to be his land. Kate is a nickname for Catherine, and on the Roots Ireland records in the notes section at the bottom of the page, it often stated "mother goes by Kate". I do not think it's strange at all for a single woman to emigrate alone...happened all the time. In the 1911 Lismaha census, there is a Kate Healy living alone, a widow. Interestingly, both the 1901 & 1911 census records show her birth county at Kerry. I would look for Alice's marriage record in South Africa.

Thank you so much for your reply.
without an exact date I can’t get the marriage certificate in South Africa. It’s very difficult to get documents there. I can’t even get my marriage, have been trying for years. And my mothers birth certificate- they told me she didn’t exist. I am also still search through over there. Would like to find some connection to family here. You never know 😊 I have found her and her husbands death records which is amazing.
thanks for your advice, I am happy to be able  to eliminate her marriage potential being in Ireland and focus more on SA.
it’s so great to be able to find this information so far back here.
will definitely look into the Kate living alone more. Would be interesting.

would you recommend the Roots website for trying to find Alice’s immigration?

Silly question but any way of knowing the families exact address to maybe see the house they lived in?

Stephanie,

I checked RootsIreland and there wasn't  a passenger ship record for a Alice Healy headed to South Africa. Per someone on Ancestry's tree, George Cummins was born in Scotland. Could Alice have met him there?

You might want to try FamilySearch (free). It includes records for South Africa.

Stephanie,

In rural Ireland, there were no addresses. The house numbers given in the 1901 & 1911 censuses were given by the enumerators at the time of the census as a way to keep track of the counting. So, the Healy's number in 1901 was 3, and in 1911 was 6...that was probably the same house, but not an address. You might check on Google Earth to see what Lismaha looks like today. You can also view more detail of the houses themselves under the heading "view census images" on the National Archives of Ireland under the census heading.

Carolyn,

Like you, I will summarize and cite information.

Thank you Mary for the suggestion of Family search. On George’s death report it says he was born in England. I believe back then people use to call Scotland and Wales England too. definitely wides the search. That was our family that put the info on Ancestry tree.
there was always some talk that one of her kids was an Everard. Joyce. Either that child was adopted or Alice married an Everard before George - that’s what my ants think.

Thank you Carolyn for sharing about the houses. Very interesting! And about the National Archives. I got the images as soon as you said!

Have no idea how you both manage to find information by reading some of the hand writing, it’s a skill in itself!! so thank you both.
