Sammon family from Cappaduff

I am trying to trace the Sammon family who lived in Cappaduff. In 1968 Patrick Sammon, who was born in 1901 and his sister Elizabeth, born 1912 were still living on the farm that their parents John and Mary had lived on. My father in law was the brother of Patrick and Elizabeth. There 12 siblings altogether. On the 1911 census the family were listed as the residents of a house 3 in Cappaduff {Inishcaltra North Clare} Any information regarding them or their families would be very welcome.

Welcome back!

Below is a link to your message from March 17th and my response. Have you obtained the civil marriage record which would show the names of the fathers of the bride and groom and where they were living in 1895? That information is key to going back further.

I have a copy of the marriage cert between Joseph & Maria and I know who their parents were,  but I am unable to find any information about Joseph and Maria's children, such as did they leave Ireland or are their decendants still in the Cappaduff area?  The only child I have any info.on is Joseph born 1915, my father-in-law.  I do have copies of the birth certs for 4 of their other children but they contain no new information that I can use.

Gill:

I checked the online Irish phone book (which is only a partial list of phone users). There were only four Sammon listings and none were in the northeast corner of Clare where your family was from.

Maybe the Scariff library branch can give you some suggestions http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/library/branches/scrflib.htm

The RC church in Mountshannon would be another possibility particularly if Patrick or Elizabeth were buried from that church.

Hi Gill,

My Name is Denis Arthur Rayner and I am the son of Margaret Rayner (nee Sammon) born on 17 Mar 1917 to the same family (I hope) you are looking into.

In 1967/68 I visited the farm at Cappaduff with my mother, from London where we lived, and met Paddy & Lizzie and stayed a week.

That was the only time I have been there and the only contact with the Sammon family I have ever had.

There were 12 siblings:

William 1909-1914 died young from Heart Failure according the the death certificate

Both Paddy & Lizzie died in 1985

I am still working on the rest of the family.

My Mum, Margaret, born 17 Mar 1917 ended up in London, England working as a Nurse (I think). She got pregnant, courtesy of my Father, George Frederick Rayner (I hope!) who both married Feb 1958 and I was born 1st July 1958!

She had American connections (I remember a Gary Grimes visiting from Queens, New York once – haven’t a clue relationship wise but I would take a bet on an earlier child – she was 41 when she had me!!) and I have data on some of her family (John & Mary at least) emigrating to the States.

If you are still looking into this, I would love to get in contact….
