SALTRY/SAULTRY from Skreen, Sligo

I have researched the Saltry/Saultry family extensively and believe that most, if not all, of the Saltrys I have found records for in the US, Canada, and Australia are probably related. My direct line is James Saultry (b: abt 1800) and Jane Bourke (b: abt 1802). James Saltry is found in the 1824 Tithe Applotment Records in Portavade (Portavaude), Sligo but this is the only record I have for him. James and Jane had at least eight children, with five of them (James, Maria, John, Thomas, and Sarah) immigrating to Scranton, Pennsylvania in the mid to late 1840's. I have no record of death for James but know that his wife, Jane, immigrated to America with her daughter, Sarah, in 1852 and can be found living with her son, John, in 1860 in the Scranton, Pennsylvania area. The family was Catholic and I have found numerous records for them in the parish of Dromard and Skreen in Sligo. I have been able to track all of the family members thoroughly once they settled in the Scranton, Pennsylvania area. What I am after is learning more about James Saltry (and his wife Jane Bourke) and his parentage and siblings. I have records for so many Saltrys but am missing the links that prove their connection to one another. Would love to hear from anyone with an interest in the Saltry family! Thank you - Kim (katcm61 at yahoo.com)

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I assume you know that the baptismal records for Skreen/Dromard RC parish start in 1823 and marriages in 1817. I searched on the subscription site Roots Ireland and did not find a marriage record so likely James and Jane were married pre-1817 unless Jane was from a different parish. I did see baptismal records for James (1823) Catherine (1824) Thomas (1833) Sarah (1835) Sara (1837). Presumably the 1835 Sarah died young.

Civil registration of deaths started in 1864. Dromard/Skreen RC parish has death records for 1826-1828 but none later.  https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0746

I did look at other Saltry marriage records and there was a David Saltry and a Stephen Saltry who were married in the 1830s in Dromard/Skreen.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Roger - My thanks to you for taking the time to reply after doing a little investigating into the Saltry family. Yes, I have reviewed and scoured the Skreen/Dromard RC Parish Records several times over the years. I'm hoping to connect James Saltry (born about 1800) to some of the other Saltrys that were born in Ireland (most of them from Skreen, Sligo) but I think the only way I'll be able to do this is either through DNA testing or to wait for other Saltry researchers to read my post and share what they know. Thank you again!

Hello KIm, my name is Tim Boyd.  My great-great grand parents are Maria Saltry(Portavaude) and Myles Boyd(Carrownee).  They were married at Skreen Church on February 4, 1846. They immigrated to Scranton Pa in 1849. I visited the Church in County Sligo in 2014 and had access to the docket that regisrered their marriage. A David Saltry was listed as a witness. Thats about all I can offer for your research.

Hello Tim - Thank you for taking the time to reach out. We are 4th cousins as my gg-grandfather, John Saultry, was the brother of your gg-grandmother, Maria Saltry Boyd. I do have a copy of the marriage record for Maria Saltry and Miles Boyd and have also had the good fortune to visit Portavade (Portavaude), Sligo. I have a number of records on David Saltry(s) but have not been able to find documentation to verify the specific family connections (brother, cousin, uncle, etc.)  Thank you again - Kim

Good morning. My name is John Boyd, a direct descendent of Myles Boyd and Maria Saltry also living Scranton, PA. It is interesting to note that after moving to Scranton that a street was named for the Saltry family in North Scranton, or Providence, PA as it would have been known at the time. Also, generations later, that the Saltry and Boyd families would intertwine again when my great aunt Kitty Boyd married into the Saltry family.

John Boyd

Hi John - Great to hear from yet another Saltry cousin! I think that you and I are 4th cousins. I've got 150+ Boyds in my family tree with most of them being descended from Miles Boyd and Maria Saltry and a few of them being descended from your Great Aunt Kitty and James D. Saltry, Jr. I'm sure there are probably a lot more that I haven't found yet. I did know about the street named "Saltry Place" in Scranton and have wondered if it was named after one of the family members or just for the Saltry family in general. My grandmother was a Saltry and her family lived on Oak Street and many of her Saltry relatives lived on West Market Street in North Scranton. Thank you for reaching out - Kim

Hello, I just wanted to mention that the area of North Scranton where Saltry Pl / Oak St/ Market St. is known as the "Notch". My grandfather, Myles Jerome Boyd, lived at 1004 Oak Street.  As you know Myles Boyd (2X grandfather) died in a coal mine accident in 1877.  James Boyd (1X grandfather) died in a coal mine accident in 1900. My garndfather, Myles Jerome, worked as a mine laborer until sometime before 1920.  According to the Census he became a Scranton Police Officer sometime in the 1920's. I remember my father, Jerome Francis, saying that "Grandpa got out of the coal mine when an Uncle, who was on the Scranton Police, passed away unexpectedly".  Nepotisim was the rule in Scranton in those days. A civil servant job was passed on to a relative when they died. My grandfather was able to get out of the mines and into the SPD and worked his was up from motorcyle patrol to desk sergeant in the Scranton PD.

According to Ancestry.com, James Francis Saltry was a Sergaent on the Scranton PD and passed away unexpectedly in 1919. I don't know for sure if this is who my grandfather replaced on the SPD but the dates match up.  I attached a photo of my Grandfather to this email. Hope you can open it.

If you have access to Ancestry.com please check out the Boyd-Saltry Family Tree. It is authored by Angela Whittaker-Becker. She did an excellent job.

Take care, Tim Boyd

Hi Tim - Thanks for the info and for sharing the fabulous photo of your grandfather, It is interesting to hear the account of how your grandfather became a police officer. My own 2x great-grandfather, John Saultry (brother-in-law to your 2x great-grandfather, Myles Boyd) also died in a coal mining accident - in 1881. His son, James F. Saltry, was employed as a coal miner when he was asked to temporarily step in for someone (I don't think it was a relative) as a mail carrier for a couple of weeks. This turned out to be the beginning of a 30+ year career for him as a mail carrier. It is interesting to learn about these career changes of our ancestors. I have been in touch with Angela in the past and have seen her impressive family tree on Ancestry too!  All the best - Kim
