Ryan - Dwyer Family of Pallasgreen

I am searching for information on the family of my great-grandfather, John Dwyer Ryan. He was supposedly born 1856 (but maybe 1854), Ballyneety, Pallasgreen. His parents were Richard Ryan and Johanna Dwyer. He arrived in Sydney, NSW, Australia, onboard 'William Duthie' with his brother, Father Patrick Dwyer Ryan. JD Ryan died 25 Dec 1926, Auburn. NSW.

I think Patrick was born c1848. He was apparently ordained on 15 June 1873 by Rev Dr Leahy, Archbishop of Cashel. He was the Parish Priest of St Nicholas' Catholic Church Tamworth from Sep 1875 to his death on 25 September 1899.

Their sister, Mary Dwyer Ryan, came to Australia when her brother Patrick returned after a 12 month trip back to Ireland. They arrived on the 'Liguria' 17 May 1887. Mary married Dr Joseph Sexton on 26 Dec 1903 at St Brigid's Church, Quirindi, NSW. Apparently she returned to Ireland sometime after her husband's death in 1921.

I found what I think is a record of Richard Ryan's death, listing date & place of death, 27 Jan 1909, Knockeravella, aged 92, farmer with the informant, son Michael Ryan of Old Pallas.

From Ireland Roman Catholic Parish Baptisms, I found the following details of baptisms of children of a Richd/Richardo Ryan & Johanna Dwyer of Knockeravella, Pallasgreen & Templebredin, Cashel & Emly:

10 Mar 1846 Margarita (Margaret)

9 Jul 1848 Patritius (Patrick)

18 Dec 1849 Gulielmus (William)

7 May 1852 Denis

27 Apr 1854 John

23 Sep 1855 Richard

30 Jun 1858 Thady

23 Jan 1861 Michael

3 Aug 1863 Mary

26 Oct 1866 Daniel (Dan)

An older family member believes that Fr Philip Xavier Ryan was another son of Richard & Johanna, however I can find no information to verify or refute this. Fr Philip was priest who spent 14 years in Australia (mainly in Carcoar, NSW) from 1866 to 1880 before returning to Ireland and going the Cistercian Order of Monks at Mount Melleray. He died 30 September 1908.

I know this is long-winded but I am looking for confirmation of the above information as well as more details on Richard (DOB & marriage), & Johanna (DOB, Marriage & death).

Thanks for any assistance.

Cathryn,

Record from RootsIreland (paid subscription). Children's names and baptismal years are consistent with what you presented above. I did not find Philip,

Possibly Richard's birth record. There was another Richard born in 1819, but father was Edmond. Since Richard's eldest son was Patrick, this seemed to fit. Siblings- Patrick 1812 (d) and 1814 and Timothy 1819

Fr. Philip's death record. In 1908, he was 73 and would have been born around 1835, if his age is correct. The Irish did not celebrate birthdates, so birth years weren't always accurate unless on an official birth/ baptismal document.

Since Johanna and Richard got married in Pallasgreen & Templebredon, I assume Johanna was from there. Typically, marriages took place at the bride's church.

I was amazed by such a prompt reply. Thank you so much all the information. It is greatly appreciated.

Is there any site where you can find information on Roman Catholic clergy eg ordination dates, where trained etc.

I believe that Patrick Dwyer Ryan was ordained 15 June 1873.

I believe that there was another - not sure if he was Hugh Ryan or Hugh Dwyer, but he was apparently based in Dublin. If he was Hugh Dwyer he may have been Johanna Ryan (nee Dwyer)'s brother, therefore born c1810-1820.

Many thanks

Cathryn,

I cannot assist you. You might want to post your last message about clergy as a new message. Include this message thread so a volunteer has some background.

Thank you Mary.

Yes I have already seen the recap in St Nicholas' history as well as some articles in Australian newspapers, however I was wanting to find more information on the Irish end, so thank you for providing other avenues of research.
