Rowen-Rouin-Rowan ~ County Clare ~ Birth Required

Hi,

I am looking for birth details of my g-g-grandfather. I believe he was born between 1829-1832, according to differences on records I have found in Australia. His father was Patrick ROWEN.

He emigrated from Liverpool on 28-Mar-1858 on the ship "Utopia" with his two brothers and one sister-in-law. They arrived in Port Adelaide, South Australia, Australia on 09-Jul-1858. The application number was 12/9/57 - if I could find the original application as well I would be very happy!

Where can I look for his birthdate?

Thanks heaps.

Kerry,

I found 87 trees on Ancestry. Some have a Timothy Rowen married to Susan Nicholls. Others have a Timothy Rowan married to Susan Kelleher with brothers Patrick and Peter. I think Susan is the same person who was born Kelleher and married a Nichols before marrying Timothy.

What is your gg grandfather's first name?

Regards- Mary

If we are looking at the correct family, per the ship record Patrick was married to Ann. Some trees suggest that Ann's last name was Hartigan. I have found no birth or marriage records on RootsIreland (paid subscription) but I might be using the wrong last name spelling. Are you sure they were from Clare?

Regards- Mary

Clare Heritage and Genealogy Centre, Corofin, County Clare have baptism records for most parishes in the County.

Tithe records can be searched at  www.nationalarchives.ie/Genealogy

Oh my gosh! I just realised I left out most of the information. I am so sorry :-(

MaryTV, yes, that is him. The passenger list for their arrival states they are from County Clare but I'm beginning to wonder if that is wrong.

McCoy - thank you for the links, I'll check them out.

Hi Kerry,

I am currently looking up my family history and came across your post. Patrick Rowen and his wife Ann Rowen (nee Hartigan) were from County Clare and were my g-g-g-grandparents (boy that makes me feel old!) I know they had a daughter, Ellen Rowen (my g-g-grandmother), who was born in County Clare and subsequently married William Osborne in South Australia. I was not aware until now that she had at least one brother, your g-g-grandfather, so this is quite exciting for me! I believe my daughter has information she found about the ship and passengers so I will check with her if the brother/s of Ellen are named and linked with her to see if we can track your g-g-grandfather for you. I see I am a few months late from when you posted, so appreciate if you have already found the information you are after.

Kind regards,

Hi Jacque,

How exciting!! I hardly ever find anyone else tracing this line.

I have Mary Ann ROWEN (b. 28-Aug-1859 in Macclesfield SA) marrying William Castle OSBORNE 16-Apr-1885 in Georgetown, South Australia. Is this the same person? If it is, I am happy to exchange information.

Thanks heaps,

Kerry.

Hi Kerry,

So lovely to hear back from you! I think that sounds about right but I will go back through the family records sent to me by a cousin of my mum to double check and will message you back once I have found the information.

Hi Kerry,

The info you have on Patrick Rowen on the Utopia to Adelaide and one of his daughters, Mary, marrying William Kessel/Castle Osborne matches the family details we have. Mary married William after his first wife Ellen (Mary’s sister) passed away from illness. The family story is that Mary promised Ellen she would look after the family for her and actually broke off her engagement to another man to do so.

Older records show William’s middle name as Kessel (which has also been used on his burial plaque) but during sometime later it was written as Castle.

One of my mum’s cousins has the following information on the sons of Patrick and Ann (Annie) Rowen, so hopefully one of them is the person you are looking for.

Patrick born 9 September 1867 in Seven Hills, South Australia.

They also had John, Michael, and James - other information however is currently unknown for these 3 sons due to a computer crash. Any other information will be sent to me once the computer issue is sorted. Another of my mum’s cousins will also have a look back through the information they have and will also send any relevant info for you. Fingers crossed that we can help you with finding out about your g-g-grandfather 😊

There is documented history for our family in Australia, and some from Cornwall, however we have little information on our Rowen/Hartigan family from Ireland so would love it if you have any information you can share. Do you mind my asking where you are? We are in various parts of Australia but Ireland is certainly one country I have been wanting to visit, however it was only more recently I found out about our Irish family.

Take care,

Jacque.

Jacque

Hi Jacque,

Thanks for that info. If you would like to take this offline, I'm happy for you to email me. That way we can share reports etc. from our different lines. Also, just been re-reading your first comment - Timothy (my g-g-grandfather) is Patricks' brother. They came out together with their younger brother, Peter.

My email address is: mikijak2009@gmail.com

"Talk" to you soon,

Kerry.
