Roots Ireland Subscription

I attempted to search the board first for this but only found one posting that did not have the information I was looking for.

I also tried to search their site but did not find my answers.

I know:

  • Pricing is posted on their site (day, month, 6 month, year) subscriptions.
  • Similar sites for other countries, someone suggested compile a list of what to search for in advance.
  • Then sign up for the minimum amount of days you think you would need to perform all the searches you need to do.
  • Probably good advice for this site as well?
  • Sample Records: Birth, Marriage, Death, Burial, Gravestone Inscriptions, Griffiths, Passenger Ships, 1901 Census, census Substitution List (Tithe & Muster Rolls?)

Resources I already have:

  • Irish Genealogy Website
  • Links for Tithe's and Griffiths
  • Links for 1901 & 1911 Census
  • NLI - Catholic Church Records
  • Family Search

What I think Roots Ireland could provide is more Birth, Marriage, Death records/information?

  • Not sure if I am understanding this correctly?

Records of Interest:

  • Longford, Sligo, Galway, Cork, Clare, Tipperary
  • Most current records I have date to about 1840-50.
  • I have some ancestors dated back to 1800 or so, but less documented.

What I cannot figure out:

  • Is there any way to figure out what timeframe they have records for outside of what the Irish Genealogy Website has?
  • Do they have Civil Records, Catholic Church Records, Church of England & Ireland records?
  • I have seen others share images they have from Roots Ireland, and they are a computer form type document. Is this the only thing they provide, or do they have an original image of the recorded document as well?

I need to compile a list before signing up but was trying to figure out what to compile (if that makes sense).

Any other insights are appreciated as well.

RootsIreland dont have record images, just transcripts. The record types available vary by county/area - check out their sources page for dates, lists of districts/parishes etc covered by county or area (some counties are split)

RootsIreland : Record Source List

They dont always have full coverage of records, i.e. not all parishes, but occasionally cover a Catholic parish not included on other sources, or some dates not covered by NLI films.

RootsIreland sometimes use alternate names for Catholic parishes - e.g. after the location of a chapel within the parish, which may show up in the alternate parish name list on NLI records.

Note RootsIreland only cover parts of Co. Cork - mostly east and north, for RC records for south west Co. Cork see IrishGenealogy.

Jmossing,

Some of the transcripts on Roots Ireland do have a link at the bottom of the transcript that says, "view microfilm of parish register", which takes you to the Catholic Parish Registers at the NLI. There you can see the original record after you select the event, year, and month. I have viewed many original records via Roots Ireland.

Regards,

Carolyn

Thank you for the responses!

Shane,

That was exactly what I was looking for.

After I looked at that, I realized they also have the ability to search by Person, Year and County, before signing up.

So that all helps me prep my list!

Carolyn,

Thank you for that additional insight.

Good Information to review all information on the results page as they may provide a link. Something I might have overlooked, had you not called it out.

Thanks!
