ROCHE / KIELY

LimerickMonagay (Limerick)

I'm searching for any information on DAVID ROCHE Parents and JOHANNA KIELY Parents. They married in 1846 in MONAGAY COUNTY LIMERICK. They had 8 children JOHANNA 1846, MAURICE 1852, ELIZABETH 1854, JAMES 1856, MARY 1856, WINIFRED 1858, DAVID 1860, ELLEN 1861. JOHN 1868. Any information would be appreciated. Thank You.

Unfortunately, there are gaps in the records for the Monagea RC parish  https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0888 and there are no baptismal records from 1813-1829 which is likely the period when David and Johanna were born.

Looks like the family lived in a place name called Glenshaska which is not an official townland. The 1850 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Monagay civil parish shows a David Roche in Rathcahill West townland and I'm wondering if that is your David. https://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/limerick/monagay.php

Civil death records are available on the free site www.irishgenealogy.ie ; There are images available for 1871-1970 but for 1864-1870 we only have index records at this time.

There is an index record for a David Roche who died in 1869 at age 50 possibly that record is for your ancestor

I looked at Johanna Roche death records and fournd a record in 1892 for a Johanna Roche who lived in Glenshesk which is close in spelling to Glenshaska. The only flaw is that the informant is a son Edmond but you do not have an Edmond listed.

See fifth record https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_retu…

Let me know if you have any questions.

Hi Roger

Thank You for your quick reply. I had a good lo ok at those records again and possibly that is him in Rathcahill West. There seems to be a a couple of Christian names there that he and Johanna called their children. Also there seems to be several Kiely families in Rathcahill West and the sponsors for the birth of their first child Johanna born 1846 were Edmund Roche and Catherine Kiely. I saw 2 Edmund / Edmond Roche's but no Catherine Kiely. I suppose she could have married by the time the Griffiths was done or moved away.

Thank You Roger for all the information it seems there's a couple of things that tie together leading towards Rathcahill West. Also I didn't realise those years of Registers were missing so it's great to now know that.

Kind Regards

Hello Joan,

I recently learned that PERHAPS David Roche (husband of Johanna Kiely) was possibly 1st cousin to my great grandfather David Roche who emigrated to New York. After 20 years, I could find no information on him, his origins, his family.

I have been looking for the source of my mysterious Roches for many years, and recently, I have had someone from MYHeritage contact me, as we are DNA matches.

In fact, he even mentioned the surname West in his first message to me.

I would be MOST anxious to learn parentage of the David Roche who married Johanna Kiely, as this may hopefully lead to the parents of my David Roche.

Also, my contact has told me that Winifred Roche, and her sister Mary, plus perhaps another sister and brother emigrated to New Zealand.

This contact has information on descent line for Winifred Roche and possibly her sister Mary.

Regarding Edmond Roche: Edmond Roche was witness to David and Johanna's marriage in 1846 AND godfather to their daughter Johanna. It is possible he is the Edmond Roche who fathered daughter Catherine with Honora Flynn in 1830.

I also see you have son James being born 1856, whilst I have him in 1850.

There are numerous David Roches in Monagea (Monagay), so I am at a loss to find the source of mine.

If you find out parents of your David Roche, I would appreciate it if you let me know.

Thank you
