Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Civil registration for RC marriages started in 1864. Since we are looking for church records prior to 1850, can you clarify whether the marriage of James Roche and (Julia) Eliza Fitzpatrick were married in Cork or Laois? Thanks!

Dear Roger

I am not sure I only have details through Ancestry.com.au of my great grandmother and her siblings birth/baptism details. James Roche .23rd May 1852, Norry Roche 30th April 1859, Ellen Roche 6th May 1862, all born Parish Clonmeen, Diocese Cloyne, County Cork and Laois, my great grandmother Johanna (Hannah) Roche birth date was 18th April 1865 birth place is written as Kanturk Cork Ireland parents James Roche and Julia Fitzpatrick. On Her New York marriage certificate dated October 6th 1889 her parents are listed as James Roche and Eliza Fitzpatrick born Ireland.

Dear Roger I apologise for my abrupt end to your reply on great grandmothers immigration records she was listed as  Roman Catholic faith. My knowledge of Ireland is very limited and there are so many James Roches etc it becomes truly confusing and I'm at a standstill with my family research until I can solve this puzzle. My great aunts Ellen and Norry came to Australia in the 1880s and married in Queensland my great grandmother Hannah travelled to the USA married had 3 children her husband Andrew Durkin born in Sligo in 1863 was killed in the Bronx New York in 1899 so my great grandmother travelled back to Ireland with her 3 children a widow and in 1901 set sail for Australia to join her 2 sisters the rest is history. My DNA says I'm 34% Irish 55% Great Britan 6% Scandinavia I am very proud of my Irish roots and my ancestors and as I research my family and the sacrifices they had to make my heart is breaking. My research has encouraged me to read about the struggles of Mighty Ireland and Scotland over the years be free and independent. Best wishes Lorretta

Lorretta:

They were married in 1845 in Banteer/Clonmeen. See transcription below. The address was shown as Thingconny which I can't locate but likely was a place name somewhere in Clonmeen civil parish. By the way, the parish register online starts in 1847 http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0018   but Roots Ireland (subscription site) has access to records back to 1828.

Dear Roger thank you so very very much for this information. My great grandmother Hannah passed away on 28th January 1951 from heart failure at Brisbane Hospital Queensland Australia the year I was born so I did not get to meet her. On her Queensland death certificate it states she was born in Banteer Cork Ireland and her father James Roche was a farmer this information may help others. I am planning to visit Ireland next year with my granddaughter and again in 2019 with my son daughter in law and grandsons and also Scotland as my maternal grandfather was Scottish. Very best wishes to you. Lorretta
