Robert Patton father of Tristram and William of Donegal county, Ireland; and cousin of Tristram Patton of Tyrone county, Ireland

I am the 5th great grandaughter of Robert Patton who settled in and around Second Creek Virginia; now West Virginia, Monroe County in about 1780s. He and his wife Jean Ramsey were from Donegal county, Ireland and migrated to Monroe county with several children, one being William. One more was born after coming to the USA, and his name was Tristram Patton or Trussie. He had a cousin also named Tristram Patton who was from Tyrone county, Ireland. I live in Greenbrier county, WV neighboring to Monroe and grew up on the family farm near where Robert settled on Second Creek. I know very little about the familiy prior to coming to USA. I would like to know who Roberts father and mother were and others in their family tree.

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I assume your ancestors were Church of Ireland and only three Donegal C of I parishes have records back to 1780 or earlier. I looked for a baptismal record for William and a marriage record for Robert and Jean but no record came up. I assume they were from a differnt C of I parish which no longer has records back to the 1700s.

You may want to consider autosomal DNA testing.

Also you can post a story about Robert and his family on our XO Chronicles site https://www.irelandxo.com/ireland-xo/history-and-genealogy/ancestor-dat…

Thank you Roger,  Jean was from Waterford and she received a bit of silver from a James Ramsey that may have been her father.?? They may have married in Waterford.  In my searching I find a lot of Pattons from Newton-Limavady in Donegal.  I feel Robert and Jean and thier children came over to US by one of many trips made by Col. James Patton from an area called Springfield in Donegal.  He had a sister named Elizabeth and her husband was a John Preston.  They were probably cousins or some kin.  Col. James Patton settled many families in the Second Creek area of Monroe county, WVA.  At the time it was Virginia.  Hope this info helps some.  One of Robert and Jean's sons name was William and he died in Alabama where he lived most of his life.  On his tombstone it says he was born in Londonderry, Ireland.  Thank  you for your help. Thank you so much,  Can you look in Waterford for Jean and James Ramsey?  Robert and Pattons were Presbyterians.  Fran

Roots Ireland does not have any Presbyterian record for Co. Waterford. I did a search anyway and no record came up.

Hello, Fran,
Several cousins and I, all descendants of your Second Creek "cousin" Tristram who is said to be from County Tyrone, have done much research trying to find the place of origin of our ancestor. This has obviously included some work on your Robert PATTON. While we've not reached our goal, we do now know a lot about the PATTONs in Counties Londonderry, Donegal, and Tyrone, and like no better than to share what we have learned.
If you would like to know more, please contact me privately at linda_reverchon(at)telus.net.

Fran and Linda,

I am a descendant of Tristram (1793-1885) and Eliza Erskine Hogshead Patton (1754-1826.) I am trying to determine if this Tristram's father is the Robert Patton you are discussing. My daughter is a freshman at Virginia Tech, and we will be visiting soon. Are there any specific places for us to see while there, beyond cemeteries?  I welcome any insight you have. Thank you!

How nice to "meet" another member of the family! Please write me directly at linda_reverchon(at)telus.net. I have some more information on our Tristram, cousin of your ancestor.

Your distant cousin,
Linda (Patton) Reverchon
