Robert Hobbs born 1784

Hi,

Are you related to Elizabeth Bollard and Margaret Bollard?
If you go to search......choose Tipperary and enter Ballard in the name search .
Then put in Luke Hogan in the name search.
These families went to Canada, have a read through them and you will see lots of information.
Robert Hobbs lived in the townland of Caroonaclough, Terryglass in 1825.
There is also a John Hobbs.
Then, we may be able to get more information for you.
Cheers

Hi,  Your Hobbs may take a bit longer to sort out.
It's easier to work backwards when compiing information.
I will come back with any information.

Dear Margot,

Thank you very much for the information and your replies. Unfortunately, the teachers here have gone back to school, so I have much less free time. As soon as I do, I will look into all the things you have been able to share. I am very grateful. I think the Canadian reputation of being nice must come in part from our strong Irish heritage. I look forward to learning more and eventually visiting Terryglass.

Best regards,

Patrick Hobbs

Hi Patrick,
Looking forward to your update, sometiime!
Take care
Margot

Hi Patrick and Margot

My mother was Patricia Hobbs and my great great great Grandfather was Robert Lewis Hobbs. Thank you for all this information. Good to see all working on the family.

Would appreciate any info that you might have beyond this?

cheers

Hi Patrick and Margot

I also am looking for information on Jane Hobbs the daughter of Robert Lewis Hobbs of Terryglass and sister of Robert Hobbs. She moved to NSW with her husband. My old family records show her married to a Faulkner but family in NSW have her married to a Hodgins. From the look of the other family members it appears that many of them did marry Hodgins? Do you have information on Jane?

Cheers

Ron McCoy

Hi Ron,
you say............
I also am looking for information on Jane Hobbs the daughter of Robert Lewis Hobbs of Terryglass and sister of Robert Hobbs. She moved to NSW with her husband.
A Margaret Hobbs married to a John Fakener went to Australia in 1842.  on the ship "Woodbridge"
His parents were Nathaniel and Penelope.
Her parents were John and Bridget Hobbs.
The file is a Jane Hobbs father John to a Andrew Hodgins. The Chruch was in Terryglass.
I can't make out the place where he is from, sorry, or his fathers name.
Cheers

Hello everyone, this is fascinating.

I am descended from William A. Hobbs (B 1832) who settled in the Ottawa Valley. His parents were John Hobbs (B1785) and Bridget Margaret Ballard (1795). However, the trail goes cold here. THe Hobbs line travelled all the way to Northern Ontario (long way from Ireland) to a place called "unopark" which is now better known as the New Liskeard / Kirkland Lake area.

I can find I think its a "tithe assesment" which references John Hobbs but can't make much out beyond that.

I want to confirm whether I am on the right track.

John Hobbs from Terryglass, Tipperary, Ireland, Married to Bridget Margaret Ballard. Anyone have any further information on these folks?

Margot, your Margaret Hobbs checks out with my tree and the NSW. Though I have many Janes in my tree but no Robert Lewis Hobbs.

Thanks,
Happy to discuss all things Hobbs...

Hi mlaughton,

You say............
Margot, your Margaret Hobbs checks out with my tree and the NSW.

I am not related to any of your names, I just help out where I can.
I was born in the area and know a lot about the people there so I know where to search.

Rober Lewis Hobbs, possibly the information is just Robert Hobbs, it depends on the records you find.
Cheers
Margot

Hello again, Margot, and Hi to all the others who have contributed to this thread!

It's been interesting to read where the family has travelled and how your searches are continuing. I have a little to add but I don't know if it's helpful or even correct. I believe that 2 brothers, Robert (1784) and John (1785) Hobbs, married 2 sisters, Mary (1791) and Bridget Margaret (1795 or 1796) Ballard. I have found a reference to John Hobbs as the men's father and Sarah, perhaps Deacon, as their mother. I have also found Moira Carroll as the women's possibly mother. It would be nice if any of you can verify or even refute these "claims". Thanks for your help and good luck!

Best regards,

Cousin Patrick

Hi all

Robert Lewis Hobbs was born 1795 and died of Malnutrient as recorded by Walter Hobbs included in Mains family tree.. He married Bridget Ballard. His son Robert Hobbs was born about 1818 and married Jane Coyles. Robert and I believe William emmigrated to Canada eventually settling on a farm they jointly owned near Kanata ontartio Canada. In a few years Robert sold his half of the farm to his brother and moved to goulbourn Township near Munster Ontaro.

Cheers

This is the Hobbs list from the Tithe records,...............the Id Hobbs is actually James, (if you click on Id you will see the page, zoom in on Hobbs it says Jas) as there isn't a year, it will be 1823.
The Tithe Applotment Books, 1823-37 (nationalarchives.ie)
In Griffiths Valuation james Hobbs is in Borrisokane in as stated in above, in the townland Rathmore.
rathmore borrisokane - Bing
Cannot see a death for him, must have been before the Civil records were introduced in 1864.
Margot

Hello everyone who has contributed to this thread on the Tipperary Hobbs and to you Margot.  I am descended from the Hobbs of Killimor and Kiltormer in East Galway (Co Longford).  My cousins there say we came from Tipperary originally and the Hobbs origin in Ireland was via a soldier Hugh Hobbs who was a horse trainer under Cromwell.  He acquired three townlands - two in Wexford and one in Tipperary. I'd like to discover the connection to the Tipperary line and build the tree. I do have DNA matches with descendants of the Tipperary Hobbs.

I have an 1836 death record of a Thomas Hobbs from Clonfert in Ballinasloe.  The page notes he converted from Protestantism which is interesting as my Killimor Hobbs were Catholic.  Maybe this is my Hobbs from Tipperary but I'm not sure.  The other thing I've noticed is the naming of my 2nd Great Grandfather Patrick Hobbs' brother John Hobbs named his son William Henry Hobbs.  Not sure if William Henry is an historical figure children were often named after or if it might be associated with the Henrys of the Tipperary Hobbs.

I'll be visiting Tipperary next week and hope to find more information.

Monica Hobbs

Hi, I am excited to read of this Hobbs info. I am a descended from William Henry Hobbs, son of John Hobbs, grandson of James.

William Henry immigrated to Qld Australia and was a pioneer settler in his community. We hold a copy of James' will. I can see his children scattered to diff parts of the world, Canada and Aust. I have never been successful in going further back than James. I know some of his children's history (but migration and marriage has made it too difficult. )

Monica, you confirm verbal info passed down through my father that the original Hobbs was in  Cromwell's army. Thank you, there must be some weight to his belief afterall. How did you discover Hugh's name?

A Tipperary Hobbs branch in Canada have the same story.  The Killimor Hobbs were very specific about the soldier’s skill set as a horse trainer.  There are books from the time such as “Soldiers of the Commonwealth” p416 “Reports from the Commission”, “Calendar of Treasury Books” “King James’ Irish” p253 list Hugh Hobbs and his patents for Wexford and Tipperary.  Some list horse trainer others just soldier. These can be found in Google Books.

Hi Mandy, thanks very much for your tips. I will look into finding those books. My dad will be so chuffed.
