Robert DARBY b 1849 (Latt, Co. Cavan)

Robert was my great grandfather who was born on 28/29 March 1849 in Latt, Co Cavan, married in Londonderry about 1874, was a member of the Royal Irish Constabulary and emigrated to New Zealand in 1876 with his new wife Mary Anna (nee Miller).

That's all I know, but I think I have found his parents, being William and Eleanor (nee Gilhooly).

Does anyone know these names or have access to records (or links) so I can find out more please?

I have extensive New Zealand information of his life there, it is only his life in Ireland I am seeking.

I would be eternally grateful.

Thanks and kind regards,

Helen (Australia, formerly New Zealand).

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Roots Ireland (subscription site) has the baptismal record for Robert and three older siblings (see below). Also, found the 1830 marriage record for the parents. There may have been other children between 1830 and 1837. The 1855 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Annagelliff civil parish shows William Darby in Latt townland as you indicated.

I was not able to locate a civil or church marriage record for Robert and Mary Anna Miller.

Roger McDonnell, thank you for your welcome, you have unlocked a brick wall standing in my world for over 30 years!!    Thank you so very much, from the bottom of my heart!

Information from a transcription in the Darby Family Bible:  "On 29th day of January  in the year of our Lord Jeus Christ 1874 Robert Darby of County Cavan and Mary Anna Miller of County Derry Ireland were joined in the holy bonds of matrimony by the Rev'd Neil McGuigan curate of Eskaleen Co Donegal Ireland in St Columba's Church London Derry - in the presence of the following witnesses:
George McCauley
and Miss Mary Donovan"

Again, this is a record I have been unable to locate.  Would it be in existence?    If so, do you know where I might look please?

Mary Anna was known as Annie, in New Zealand.

With much gratitude,

Helen Davey

Helen:

Glad to be able to assist.

I tried looking for the marriage record and it appears that the marriage was not registered civilly. I also tried to find the church marriage record on the subscription site Roots Ireland and got no record like I did two days ago. Roots has the marriage records for the church which is St. Columba's Long Tower. I note the priest who officiated at the wedding was not from the parish and I'm wondering if he never provided the specifics of the marriage to the parish office and the info never made it to the parish register.

You may want to contact the church http://longtowerchurch.org/ and ask them to check but I would be very surprised if a record can be located.

By the way, www.irishgenealogy.ie is a free Irish government site which has actual images of birth, marriage and death records. I checked there for the marriage record with no success. The images for death records start in 1879 but there are plans to add the 1864-1878 images in the coming months.I did look for possible death records for William and Eleanor Darby and found  index records in the 1870s in the Cavan registration district for both William and Ellen Darby. I don't know if they are your ancestors. Can you make a note to followup with me in six months or so? You can comment here or send me an e-mail at castlemore@irelandxo.com  and I can tell you if additional death record images are added prior to 1879.

Dear Roger, thank you (again) for your time and interest.   I appreciate the information you have shared and I shall certainly followup with you as you kindly suggest.

In the meantime I will contact the church.    Robert was "stationed" with the Royal Irish Constabulary in Donegal until his resignation on 5 April 1876 to emigrate (according to his RIC records) so may have wished his regular priest officiate in Londonderry?     Are there places called "Loughford and Leibium"?  [Spelling is my interpretation from RIC Service Register original script.]  Seems he was "commissioned"  here.

Kind regards

The only possibilities would be Co. Longford and Co. Leitrim which border each other.

Hello Helen,

My Grandmother was an Anne Darby from College Street, Cavan Town. She was born there in 1903. Her father was John Darby from Latt near Cavan Town.  He maybe related to Robert Darby.

Unfortunately, I don't know anything about my Darby ancestors.

Regards,

Celine McGuinness.
