Robert Carey of Clonnamanagh?
Hello all
My 5x great grandfather was Robert Carey (also noted as Carry or Kerry), born around1785, who I believe was fromClonnamanagh. Unfortunately, his army records have it as "Clamonagh, Westmeath" so I could be wrong in my guess.
Robert was part of the 42nd Regiment of Foot (now the Black Watch) during the Napoleonic Wars. I have his paperwork that tells me he signed up in Mayo in1805. He was part of some of the major battles of the Napoleonic Wars including Waterloo.
He married my 5x great grandmother, Marion or Mary Tough in Musselburgh not far from Edinburgh in 1811 when the 42nd were stationed there. Marion travelled with Robert on campaign and they had children while they were travelling. Their children were John (my direct ancestor) Mary, Robert, Robert, Ann, William, Angus Fraser and Thomas Cassidy. I'm wondering if the two youngest were named after friends or after relatives (I've not found any Angus Fraser's or Thomas Cassidy's on the Tough side to date).
I have no idea who Robert's parents were, it's only the information I have from his military record (which is on FMP under Robert Carry) which I originally found on the British National Archives page athttp://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C10660355
Interestingly, also via the British National Archives, is a James Kerry who was from "Clomonagh, Westmeath" who was in the73rd Regiment of Foot about 15 years or so after Robert, which makes me wonder if they were related, perhaps uncle and nephew?http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C8789058
I've been unable to locate a death certificate in Scotland, though I have one for his wife and it reads as though he is still living at that point.
I've located a number of DNA relatives on Ancestry further down the Carey line with the mix of Scottish Tough, though I'm the only one on GEDMatch at the moment.
Thanks very much in advance.
