Thanks Patricia.  John Joseph Walshe, born 29 March 1912.  I have found a John Joseph Walshe in Corlican on the 1911 census, but who is 14 months younger than my father.  I know his surname is common. I'd be really interested to know if, to your knowledge, where the  child is illegitimate and if the family wanted to hide the connection, the birth date and/or surname can be relied upon.  Many thanks for your help and interest.

I found a birth record for John Walsh born on 29 March 1912 whose Mother's name is Mary Walsh but no father is listed. I've attached the extract here - the writing is a bit hard to read so I'll let you try and decipher it!

There's a brilliant website https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/en/ and it is free to use, you don't even have to sign up.

It has civil and church records (only for a couple of parishes though, Dublin is one).

Using the Census information, I spent hours on that site and found a wealth of information, it's very easy to get lost in there!
