Rahilly Family before 1843.

I have been successful in finding a great deal of my Rahilly history. The earliest date I have related to my great-grandfather Patrick Rahillyis a Poverty Relief Loan dated in 1843 for farm implements in Newtown/Templebredon. This doc indicates he was 21 years at the time. From that date foward I have found a great deal of info about him. Most of the info was found in the RC parish of Sologhead.Married: Marie Sugrue @ July 13, 1857.Birth of their children(all in Sologhead parish): John/1856, Patrick Rahilly/1859, Julia Rahilly/1861, James Rahilly(my grandfather)/1863, Timothy/1865 and Mary/1867. Patrick died in the Tipperary Workhouse in 1889. His age at death is indicated as 67. Both his age at the time of the Poverty Relief Loan and hisage at death imply that his birth was approx 1822. Patrick's wife Mary died at the birth of their daughter, Mary in 1867. Her age was listed as 35, implying a birth year of apporox. 1832. Both Patrick and Mary are interred in Ballinaclough Cemetery

Three of Patrick & Maria's sons, James(my grandfather), Timothy and John came to USA in 1883 and 1887. Their surname was spelled Reilly on the ship manifest. Today we are Reilly here in the US. Their son Patrick Rahilly remained in Ireland. His descendents are still there today in the same general area. I have been unable to find anything on Julia beyond her baptizm Their last child, Mary, died shortly after birth, in 1867 as did her mother Marie Sugrue Rahilly.

Today I struggling to findearlier info about both Patrick Rahilly and Marie Sugrue. One theory I am working on is that they may not be originally from County Limerick. I base that thought on the name Rahilly being more common in Kerry in the era I am searching and, most impotantly, Sugrue being viryually exclusive, andstill is today, to Kerry. I have found nothing more than remote possibilities that, up to today, have gone nowhere.

I do have a new piece of information concerning a Honora Barrett (nee Rahilly). I have reason to believe that she is the sister of Patrick Rahilly. If not a sister, she is undoubtedly a cousin to Patrick. She was married to a William Barrett from Newtown/Templebredon.

I would be very thankfull for any advice I can get at this point. I look forwar to hearing from you.

Hi Col,

What I know via docs is the following:

1) Patrick Rahilly obtained a Poverty Relief Loan for farm implements in 1843. His residence on that record was Newtown, Templebredon, County Limerick. His age is listed as 21 years on this doc. This gives the 1st ref. to a birth year of 1822 or thereabouts.

2) Patrick's marriage and the birth of of their six children all occurred in the RC parish of Sologhead from 1856 through 1867.

3) Patrick died in the Tipperary Workhouse of cancer in 1889. His age at that time is listed as 67.  This is the  2nd ref to a birth year of 1822 or thereabouts.

4) Three of Patrick's children left Ireland for the USA. In 1883 (2 brothers together, one of which is my grandfather James) arrived ultimately in Fitchburg Masachusetts USA. A thrid brother arrived in Fitchburg Massachusetts in 1867. All three Rahilly's were documented on the individual ship manifests as Reilly as compared to the actual spelling of Rahilly. Another brother, Patrick, came Fitchburg but stayed only for a year or so (approx 1880) and returned home. Family legend here says that he simply didn't like it here.  His descendants remain today in the general area of Templebredon and Pallasgreen, County Limerick.

5) When the Reilly men arrived here they all boarded  with the family of William Barrett.  I research William and found that as I suspected he and the Rahilly's were both from Newtown, Templebredon.  With a bit more research I learned that both William Barrett and Patrick Rahilly came here to Fitchburg together from Ireland in 1878. As I researched more on William Barrett I found that in 1881 his father died (in Ireland), So William sent for his mother to come to America in 1882.  I then learned that his mother, Hanora Barret, died here in Fitchburg in 1901. Her death certificate here indicates her name as Honora Reilly.  I then dug through and found that Honora and her husband, also William, were married in 1857 in Solghead parish and that record indicates her name as Honora Rahilly.  These facts are what brought me to the conclusion that Honora Rahilly was at a minimum related to my great grandfather Patrick and likely his sister.

6) I found the Honora connection just a couple day prior to my original post here. Yestreday (May 26, 2017) I got a look at Honora Barrett's death cert here in Fitchburg. The death cert indicates that Honora's mother's name was Gould and her father's name was Martine Rahilly ( I assume that to be Martin). The Gould name has not appeared anywhere until now. On the other hand Honora's birth was in 1833 so we are now talking about 194 years ago.  The other thing that now gives me pause as to Honora being a sister to Patrick now is that this is the first and only appearnce up to today of the forename Martin. I will begin to look at the Barretts here in Fitchburg, Massachusetts. It is relatively numerous Irish name here.

Thanks for the Patrickswell Patrick Rahilly recommendation. This lies about about 36km NE of Templebredon so it is certainly within the realm of possibility.

Thanks again
