Quinn/Brackin Family

We are searching for our great grandparents in Ireland. The first records we have found are here in the US. Michael Quinn and his wife, Bridget Brackin, immigrated to the US before 1849, when the baptism of their first child was registered in St. Peter's Cathedral in Wilmington, DE. Michael in one of his records stated that he was from Queen's County and Bridget was from Kings. Michael had a brother Patrick (Mary King(?). Their first son, Thomas was baptized in Ireland:

This is the only record I have found from Ireland.

There were 2 Brackin women living with the Quinns in the 1850 census, Mary (50) and Ellen (30). Michael was listed as 40 and Bridget as 25.

We have had no success finding family in Ireland. We heard that there were 8 pairs of brothers, Michael and Patrick, who left Ireland during the 1840s, and there was no dplication in the parents' names. We have not been able to locate this list of brothers.

We also think that this family arrived in the US in 1947 aboard the ship Enterprise.

We have a family tree on Ancestry. If you would be interested in seeing it, I can send you the link.

My brother, Jerry, would make a special trip to Ireland if there were anyone who could help us get back to the homeland.

Thank you for any information you can provide us.

There are 38 Bridget Bracken baptism records from Offaly (King's) 1812-1898 on www.rootsireland.ie/

Do you have a birth year for her?

If you can provide approximate birth years for both Bridget & Michael I can send you the records

Thank you for your interest.

Bridget was listed as 25 in the 1850 census, so Her birthdate could be 1824, 1825, or 1826.

Michael was listed as 40 in the 1850 Census, so his birthdats could be 1809, 1810 or 1811.

Thank you, Col. We have Bridget listed as being born in 1825 and with 2 female relatives (Mary, 50 & Ellen, 26) living with the Quinn family in 1850 in Wilmington, DE. Of the 3 you found, the first one seems more likely.  I have wondered if Mary was her mother or aunt and Ellen her sister.  Did you find either of those two names?

Also, in a post my Maureen on March 20, I found the mention of a Patrick Quinn born on 31 mar 1822, mentioning Portarlington, Kildare Y Leighlin, Offaly.  The father was listed as John Quinn and the mother as Catherine Connon (Connor?). We have several Johns and Catherines in our family. Could this be Michael's brother?

Also, I mentioned in my first post that we had been told about brothers, Michael and Patrick, leaving Ireland in the 1840s and having no repetition of parent names among them. It was someone from the AOH who mentioned this to my brother.  Can you tell me how to contact them to access the list of names?

Thank you.

JustMRQ

Can you elaborate on AOH?

Don't be too hung up on birth years being gospel; there was a lot of transcription error, illiteracy probelms and the simple fact that birthdays were not celebrated or even accurately known. People also put their ages up or down if they felt so inclined.

Thank you for your concern.

AOH is the Ancient Order of Hibernians. My brother spoke to a member of that organization about 10 years ago and was told that there were 8 brother, Pat & Mike Quinn, who left Ireland during the 1840s and that there was not a repeated parent name among them.  I have been trying to contact the AOH in Ireland and have not had success. I don't know if AOH has the list or if this member accessed the list from somewhere else.

I realize that birthdates fluctuate. I have found Michael's death here in Wilmington, DE listed as 23 jan 1900 at 89.  He is buried in Cathedral Cemetery in Wilmington.

Thank you for any information you can find.

I would be interested in any information regarding Michael and Bridget that is found.  I am one of their descendents--James A. was my great grandfather, Edward F. Quinn Sr. my grandfather and Edward F Quinn Jr. my father.  Per Fr. James Cassidy, Michael was born in 1811 and Bridget in 1829. Michael was from Queens County and Bridget from Kings County.  Hope this note is received--RMQ, Wyoming, DE

I would love to see the family tree you have on ancestry if possible.  Thanks, RMQ Wyoming, DE--I have 5 children and #18 grandchild is on the way--would be willing to add to the tree if desired.

BTW--the last granddaughter is named after Bridget Brackin, in her honor, I was told.  RMQ

After spending time on Ancestry, it is my feeling that the final birth for Bridget suggested by COL makes the most sense.  Here's why:  Michael and Bridget's oldest son was named James, possibly after Mary's father.  Per info provided under Mary Elizabeth (Quinn) Cassidy, one of James A. Quinn's children, Mary's father was Rearman Brackin who died in 1849 in Ireland. This would have been Mary Elizabeth's grandfather.  Could Rearman be, James Rearman or Rearman James Brackin?  Mary (?M. Castle) came to Wilmington in 1850 after Rearman's death and I suppose Ellen came at the same time.  They lived at 9 West Front Street (now MLK boulevard)  and went to church at nearby St Paul's.  So one step back into Ireland, I feel confident that Bridget Brackin's (or Bracken) parents were Rearman and Mary, and Mary Bracken came to Wilmington, DE in 1850 after Rearman's death.
