QUINN & GRIMES

Thomas Quinn, Bridget Grimes and Patrick Quinn

don't have much information on these three above named people

i've been looking at the records in County Clare, county Laois and County Limerick the limerick search is because i had a hint Bridget may have been baptised there at St Catherine's (unconfirmed)

As there son Patrick Quinn was born in 1848 i'm guessing the age to be 20 years before again could be completely wrong and based on that guess i've assumed marriage would be from 1844-1848.

Thomas and Bridgets son Patrick came to Australia before 7/7/1877 as he was married here in Australia on that date. This is were i found his parents names and the county Clare from his wedding certificate, but on one of Patrick's sons birth certificate it stated from Old Queens County. I have all of Patrick's Australian history, but no documents for Ireland, I cant even find his passenger list, but working with Australian register's for that.

Re: Thomas and Bridget its unknown if they stayed in Ireland as I haven't yet found any concrete evidence on these two to follow up leads. I know of only Patrick being a child of theirs but as a catholic family and history believe there were more children, I have gone through the alphabet with just a letter and surname Quinn with patents being Thomas and Bridget but all the hits i've looked at have been different maiden name for Bridget ruling these out.

Thank you for reading and any help and or suggestions will be appreciated.

Lisa,

Can you provide volunteers more information on Thomas and Bridget? Were they married? Did they stay in Ireland? If not, where did they go? When? Did they have children- names, when, and where? When and where did they die?

Hi Mary

thank you for your reply, unfortunately i don't have much information on these three people

Lisa,

I have checked Ancestry and RoosIreland both paid subscriptions and have not found a record for Patrick's baptism nor his parents' marriage. I also checked for other children. There are several trees on Ancestry but none have parents' names nor provide documentation for baptism. Some do suggest he was born in 1839. It looks like you have a private tree.

It was difficult to read Bridget's last name on the marriage record. Are you sure it is Grimes? I found this record on Ancestry.

It clearly states on Patrick Jr's birth cert that his father Patrick was from Queen's County, Ireland. As you know, this is now Co. Laois.

I searched Laois baptisms from 1838-1858 for Patrick Quinn with parents Thomas and Bridget. There were 11 Patricks, but none with these parents.

glanvil3@aol.com

And then again...the marriage cert seems to say Co. Clare!

glanvil3@aol.com

Young Patrick's birth cert says he had sisters Bridget, Ellen, and Mary Ann. Trees for this family on Ancestry name additional children.

hi Patricia,

thank you for your search, but like me there doesn’t appear to be any Thomas Quinn and Bridget Grimes matched together. Frustrating indeed. I was reading through tips on marriage and baptisms and found something very funny but if this happened in my case I give up hahah, so it was known that the priest would always celebrate with the family for the baptism, and what often happened due to the priest being inebriated through celebration he’d document the godmothers name as the mothers name!! So if this is true IVE go no hope of ever finding a record hahaha, but I will go down that rabbit hole with an assumption of the godmother to be a female Grimes attached to baptism with Thomas Quinn, so here I go using the alphabet to find a grimes female name and then see if I have a match, far fetched but I have to give everything a try as I’m at a loss now to where else to look. Thank you again for your input, if you think of anything else please pop past and send me a message. Lisa

hi Mary, a huge thank you for searching my people I appreciate that so very much. I believe it is Grimes although it is faint but it’s a name that come down from family members so I believe it to be true, as all the searching is coming up with zero I’ll be starting again for variations of both first name and surname, as both have a variation. I have loosely done this with all the variations I know of for Grimes, but did  read on another Grimes post about the variation of names to which I knew these, but out of left field was the name Bloomer aka Grimes, no idea how that came from grimes but I’ll give anything a go. If you have any further suggestions and or thoughts please pop past to send me a message. Thanks again. Lisa

Wherever the family was from the parish might not have started documenting baptisms or marriages until after your family events took place. Civil records started in 1864 so the information might not exist.

Griffith's Valuation of Laois was taken around 1850 and published two years later. There were nine heads of household named Thomas Quinn. Perhaps one of them was Thomas's father?

Hi Mary, yes I did recently read that about when the wedding and baptism documentary started, I’m guessing thats why I’m finding no evidence whatsoever, that is for your input I really appreciate the advice. Lisa

LisaGibbs

Hi Patricia, thank you so so so very much for your land information as IVE found it rather difficult to understand the Griffith book. I’ll take a look at these and see how I go. On another note I was viewing Patrick Quinn’s son’s military record and found two things I wasn’t expecting, first was John Joseph Quinn’s (Patrick’s last born son) wedding certificate so that was a great gift and the other thing was a letter to Australia defence office with a letter for said John Joseph from a H D Graham stating he was a cousin that had just arrived in Australia and knows no one here and or has any friends etc, he requested John Joseph’s address details as needed bail money as he was in jail at the time of writing the letter, now this is all fine and well but what caught me was his name being Graham, could this be a cousin via Bridget Grimes as we know Grimes can also be Graham, the other thing he mentioned was he’d come from England, another avenue to look at, did the Quinn’s migrate to England? What do you think?

Lisa

Hi Lisa,

How sure are you about the name Grimes? If the marriage record is the only place you've found it, I'd suggest you reconsider. The two witnesses at the wedding had the surname Glasheen. Could that be Bridget's surname too? It can also be spelled Glisheen, Glisane, Glison, or Gleeson.

glanvil3@aol.com

Hi Patricia

thanks for your message as it happened I just looked up Patrick’s death certificate on our BDM and it clearly stated in typed form Bridget Grimes, as for the wedding certificate the parents were not in attendance as to my knowledge they didn’t come to Australia but in saying that it’s unproven until I find out otherwise. I’m in a few ancestry Facebook groups and have had some recent conversations about the facts I have and where and what to do next in this situation, comments were useful and I’ll take them onboard and do what they suggested, one thing that did come up was about the parents dates of birth, as IVE given them assumed dates, it was suggested that women in that era birthed children right up into their 40’s so that gave me food for thought in changing date out to 20years +/- and see what that comes up with, it’s fact on Patrick’s date of birth, although some family who copy and paste trees have him born in 1839. If you go by his wedding certificate he’s 29 which brings it to 1846 so I’m happy with a two year gap at the moment as I know to use both in searches. So my task today is following up with some DNA Quinn matches 4-5 x amount x removed cousins to look at these trees for all the male Quinn’s (oh take notes of the female ones too for further research) and check all information they may have and sources etc to help build an idea of where my Thomas and Bridget may have been located as in township, if I get some resources like this I can then have a guide to parishes that can be looked at and if that have township that will give me follow up on information, of course nothing is proven until I see those two glorious names on a document together!

One thing to keep in mind about death records--the information was provided by a third party and sometimes that person was confused, grieving, mistaken. So death record info is sometimes incorrect.

About ages...the Irish were not in touch with their ages or birthdates.  It wasn't important to them. They didn't have to supply ID showing age like we do.  Birthdays were not celebrated.  People often didn't know their birthdate.  I recently traced an Irish woman in six censuses as well as her death record. Every one gave a different birth year--and her age varied over time by 17 years! So we have to be openminded about our ancestors' ages.

glanvil3@aol.com

Hi Patricia

thank you for that information on birthdays as I’d not know that at all, so good tip for me. As for death certificates you’re absolutely correct definitely room for error on these forms which makes sense. It’s food for thought about not getting totally hung up on that date of birth I’ll definitely take that on board, so thanks again for your input and knowledge you’ve been very helpful with all your posts. Oh if you think about anything and or suggestions let me know!

Hi Lisa,

Another idea is to trace the witnesses at baptisms and marriages. These people are often close relatives. The Glasheens, for instance.

Do you belong to any Irish genealogy groups? They can be very helpful. Their lectures are given on zoom so you can attend no matter where you live. I am a member of two: Irish Family History Society--www.ifhs.ie; Irish Family History Forum--ifhf.org.

glanvil3@aol.com

Hi Patricia

funny you should ask about that as looking at these today, no luck thus far, the Glasheen person was here in Australia but of course worth checking, my lasted search is in county Clare Emmisiton as I noticed that Mary Patrick’s wife came from there and maybe it was an arrangement they had, so im looking for traces in that area.
