Quinn to Chwiendacz

My husband’s great grandparents were born in Poland (Austria) around 1865. He was always told they originally came from Ireland. When they came to Canada through the US in the late 1800’s they settled in Saskatchewan where my husband’s uncles changed their name from Chwiendacz to Quinn, which was supposed to be their original name. I have been unable to find birth records from Poland (Austria) as to where his great grandparents’ families were from. Are there any records of people emigrating to Poland (Austria)?

There are no records of migrants from Ireland to Poland (or anywhere in the Austro-Hungarian Empire). Indeed there are no comprehensive outward migration records from Ireland to any country. The authorities in Ireland had little use for such information and so it just wasn’t compiled.  Such records that do exist tend to be on arrival in the destination country.

I am sure that some Irish people will have moved to Poland for work or other reasons but it certainly wasn’t a common destination for them.

Thank you for this information. I am going to attempt to find Poland/Austrian birth records and hopefully find names and birthplaces of parents and work backwards.
