Query RE: Patrick Lynch and his descendants, Sonvolaun, County Mayo

Requesting information on Patrick Lynch and his descendants, County Mayo.

Patrick was born in 1805, died on October 28, 1895. Place of death, Swinford. He was a farmer, married, and had three sons: James, Owen, and John. Owen and John were twins, born in 1834. The family farm was in Kilmovee Civil Parish, Sonvolaun Townland.

Patrick’s son, John, married Ellen Finley and they had at least one son, Patrick J., born Feb. 3, 1862. This Patrick (grandson of the other Patrick) emigrated to the US in 1880. He married a Johanna Stack, born in 1861. She was from Cahir, County Tipperary. They married in Philadelphia on May 24, 1885. They had ten children, six of whom lived into adulthood. Patrick worked many years as a metal “chipper” at Baldwin Locomotive Works in Philadelphia.

He died on August 16, 1945.

Go raibh maith agat!

Roger- You did not happen to come across records of John Lynch, twin brother of Owen, did you? John is the father of my great-grandfather, Patrick Lynch

I don't see a church marriage record in Roots Ireland and I don't see the 1862 baptismal record for Patrick. Did John stay in Ireland or did he emigrate?

Thank you, Roger. I may be mistaken. I do know, however (from Ancestry DNA), that our Lynch family was located somewhere in a five mile radius of Knock. To the best of my knowledge, my great grandfather, Patrick J. Lynch was born Feb 3,1862. His parents names were John and Ellen. Might that help any? Much appreciated for all your help!

Vince Lynch

Vince:

The RC parish for the Lynch family was Kilmovee. There is a two year gap of baptismal records in Kilmovee parish from September 1861 until November 1863. Likely Patrick was born in this gap period and no record is available.

Yes, Roger. In my earlier research I noted that two year gap as well in the baptismal records for Kilmovee which are archived at the NLI. In light of that, can I presume then, that the Patrick Lynch records in Griffith’s Valuation for Sonvolaun Townsland are those of my family? That Patrick would have been my third great- grandfather, I believe. Thank you again! Any other resources you might suggest could be researched?

Vince Lynch

Vince:

Yes, the Patrick Lynch in the Griffiths should ne your ancestor. The only other resource would be the Tithe listings but I checked and there were no Lynch records in Kilmovee civil parish.

Thank you so much, Roger. This certainly solves a “brickwall” for me. Is it likely I might find some of the family graves in Kilmovee? Do you think the RC Church of the Immaculate Conception (built in 1859) might have a parish graveyard or parish records of burials to access? Are there other local cemeteries I might explore?

Many thanks!

Vince Lynch

Roger- In reference to your question of whether my great-great grandfather John Lynch remained in Ireland or emigrated, I located his Report of Deaths document. John died in Sonvolaun on April 8, 1907 from “senile decay”, age 73. Present at death was “Pat Lynch, nephew”, who I believe was the son of Owen Lynch.

Vince Lynch

Will do,  Roger. Thanks! Vince

Vince Lynch

Roger- I had no luck in finding Lynch family burials in the Kilmovee document. Thanks for sending it along. I did notice most of the burials were from recent years. Back in the 1800s-early 1900s were burial records limited? If I contacted the Kilmovee RC parish might they have old funeral Mass records on file that could be  accessed? Thanks, Roger! Vince

Vince Lynch

Vince:

I don't know how far back they keep death records but I doubt that they would have records from the 1800s. I would email the parish to see when their death records start.

Will do, Roger! I will let you know what I find out. Best.  Vince
