Power Family of Carrick-on-Suir

Hello! I am hoping to connect with anyone who may have information about our family line. The family moved to the USA (residing in Massachusettes by 1855)after 1850. The best we can tell Michael Power (born abt. 1816)and Johanna Whalen were married at St. Molleran's in Carrick-on-Suir on February 7, 1842. The church was able to provide me with the marriage record and it looks like there are witnesses (maybe a brother and sister-in-law), Edmond and Marie. I cannot seem to find much for family records past this. We know the couple had multiple children, but our family line descends from his son Michael Louis Power born in Ireland on August 19, 1849.

We believe that Johanna Whalen was born about 1818 in Ireland to parents James Whalen and Julia Connor. Any help connecting us to the family both past and present would be greatly appreciated. We just took our first trip to Ireland where a wonderful young man at a pub told us about this site. We are so pleased to find such help! Thank you again!

Heather:

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I looked at Roots Ireland and found two baptismal records-Michael in 1849 and James in 1844 (below). They were baptized in Carrickbeg RC parish which is actually in Co. Waterford just south of Carrik on Suir parish. I looked for a baptismal record for Johanna but did not find her.

I will do some more searching.

I am not sure whether there is a connection, but this is what I have...

My husband's grandfather, Michael Stanilaus Power, born March 21, 1881, Waterford, died 1926, Cape Town, South Africa. He was a medical doctor and was sent to Mahe Island as medical officer.  Siblings were Eugene Aloysius Power ( b.1880,emigrated to USA), Susan Power, b 1884, John Power, b. 1886, Mary ( k.a. Maisie) b. 1889, Margaret ( k.a. Daisy) b. 1891, Thomas ( k.a. Tony or Tommy) Power, b. 1893, emigrated to Canada, Francis ( k.a. Frank) b. 1896, Waterford.

The interesting connection is that Mary ( Maisie ) Power married Thomas Connelly ( b. 1878) and the Connelly family home is in Carrick-on-Suir.

Michael & Maisie's parents were John Joseph Power ( b. 1842, Waterford City) and Frances Mary Power ( maiden name = married name, b. 1860)

John Joseph's parents were possibly Owen Power and Mary Power, but I have been unable to find further info on this branch.

Frances Mary's parents were possibly Michael Power ( d. circa 1871), and Susan Quinn, dates unknown.

If any of this rings a bell, please contact me - I would love to discover more.

Hi Heather!  My husband's family moved to the US in the 1850s' as best as I can tell.  I am not sure the if they are the same family line or not.  I will see if I can make any connections through Ancestry.com and circle back.  Thanks for sharing!

Hi Heather - i guess you are still exploring your ancestry?   I dare say that you - like me - are finding it difficult to find relevant information on the Powers of Carrick on suir / Carrickbeg.   Not many people seem to be doing Power family history in CoS so not a ot of info out there on the web.  For your info my father was Michael Francis Power born in carrickbeg in1922, his father Patrick b 1872 in cos - his father Edmund  born in c'beg.25/12/1843  Birth entry shows his father was Johannis Power (dob.and place of birth unknown) and his Mother was Ellening Ratch or Roache or Rochford (entry is not sufficiently clear but it is looking like it was probably an abbreviation for Rochford).  So far - after much trying cannot find any mariage record or births for this couple

Over the years i have noted down lots  of information on the Powers of cos/cbeg.  I also have a copy of the cos 1799 census.and books about Cos and , the Powers origins,  Also during a visit to Ireland abt 10 years ago i photod lots of Power gravestones in the older currch yards of C/beg just in case i needed to refer back to them in the future.  Unfortunately did not have time to do the stones in the ancient graveyard of c/beg which was locked up at the time.    I doubt my above info will tie into easily to your tree but who knows, c/beg is small even now so back in the 1840's would have been so small that many Powers are likely to have been related somehow.

The above Edmund married Margaret De La Hunty and they lived in Waterford Road C/beg (AKA Yellow Road) in the late 1800s, and my grandfather Patrick (first wife Mary Byrne (alsoknown as Mary Daniel / Mary Donnel!) 2nd wife - my grandmother was  Mary obrien) they lived in Mass Road which is a stones throw from St Mollerans church - so quite strong roots in carrickbeg.   If I can help with any info, please keep feel free to contact me.  Regards Sean Power. PS my yougest granddaughter also called Heather!)

I just purchased a copy of Edith Somerville's "The States Through Irish Eyes," London, 1931. It is inscribed "Maisie Power--In remembrance of the pleasure of meeting a new cousin & seeing an old place. May 30-June 2, 1931. Edith OE. Somerville." Could this Maisie be one of your kin??  Caroline Fearey Schimmel (1/4 Irish), NYC

Regarding Edmund Power and Margaret Delahunty mentioned above.

My great grandfather was Michael Joseph Power who emigrated to the U.S. around 1886 from County Tipperary taking up residence in Newport, Rhode Island USA where he worked as a carpenter, married, and raised a family of 9 children.

His Newport, Rhode Island marriage certificate and record transcription from St. Joseph RC (Newport Rhode Island) list his parents as Edmund Power and Margaret Delahunty. With the help of a Dublin genealogist I was able to get a copy of his baptismal certificate from St. Nicholas Church in Carrick-on-Suir which also listed his parents as Edmund Power and Margaret Delahunty and his baptismal sponsors as John Cummins and Ellen Delahunty. See PDF file attached.

I hope this information is of use.

I visited Carrick-on-Suir in August of this year (2023) to get idea of its location and orient myself. I will return to see if I can learn more about my Power family line in the near future. If any wishes to connect with me directly having any information to share please do. Respectfully, Gary I. Wilson, email: wilsongi@aol.com
