Phel(e)ans from Kilmacow
My great grandmother, Alice Phelan (born 1832) came to the US in the early1850's I believe. She married Michael Murphy and they raised their family in Leeds/Catskill NY. I've been unable to determine if they were married when they arrived, or if they got married in the US. Both happened around the same time.
I was under the impression that both Alice and Michael were from Tipperary, but when I visited the cemetery where they're buried in Catskill, I found that there are other graves in the family plot for Richard Phelan, and his sister Bridget Phelean. Bridget's stone says that it was erected in her honor by her brotherRichard, and that she was born in Kilmacow, Kilkenny. Her year of birth is shown as 1824. Richard's stone says he was born in 1836, but itdoesn't say where. From census info, I can tell that he was also born in Ireland.
I am wondering if these two Phelansiblings are also siblings of my great grandmother Alice. And if so, was she also born in Kilkenny rather than Tipp? Maybe Bridget was born in Kilmacow, but then the family moved?
I've been unable to trace Alice back to Ireland, or to determine names/info about her parents/family. Wondering if anyone knows anything about Bridget Phelean from Kilmacow, her brother Richard, and whether there are other siblings...maybe my Alice (fingers crossed!).
Appreciate any help/information I can get. Thanks!
Donna
