Patrick Rooney

Hello there,

I am trying to find the parents of my ancestor Patrick Rooney born in 1820 at Dolphins Barn Dublin. His fathers name could be spelled another way and I believe the name Rooney and its equivalents come from County Down gaelic spelling is O' Ruanaidh, other spellings could be Roony, Rownoe and Roney.

Patrick Rooney married Anne Verschoyle in Dublin in about 1838 and died also in Dolphins Barn in 1851. They had 8 children

James Rooney, Susannah Mayne (born Rooney), Anne Christina Rooney, Mary D'arcy Kelly (born Rooney), Julia Mc Rae (born Rooney), Patrick Joseph Rooney, Agnes Mary Murray (born Rooney), Henry D'arcy Rooney

Anne Rooney and family except Susannah migrated to Australia in 1880s

Thank you

Maggie

Hi Maggie, I have been asked to look at unanswered queries by the admin and have not been terribly successful in your case. On the plus side I see also a Julia Rooney born in 1846 to these persons. One of the issues appears to be the mothers name is butchered in some of the transcriptions and there appear to be no variants the search engine finds.

Dolphins Barn is in St James Parish, Dublin and all the births appear there and can be viewed for free here https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/en/ ; Select church records and Dublin, only some counties have church records on here and civil records are from 1864 except Protestant marriages from 1845.

While there are a few Patrick Rooneys born around your timeframe it is impossible to say which one may be him, church records are patchy. The marriage was probably in the brides parish and I cannot locate one on Irish Genealogy or Roots Ireland a subscription site and appears to be not great in Dublin, Her name is unusual but known, main family appear to have been well off, not sure her branch, there are some placenames just south of Dublin City centre in Dublin 2 bear the name. Here is a link to some land registration entries about them, https://landedestates.ie/family/302 ;

Rooney is indeed from Down, now Northern Ireland, McLysaghts Irish Surnames says from the area called Ballyroney, in the Gaelic language Bally is taken as meaning town usually spelled Bailie when writing but Bally in placenames. You can see it here on a map https://www.townlands.ie/down/ ;

I see a Peter Rooney died in St James parish listed as a pensioner in church records from Irwin Street, could be the father but only a guess, a few Rooney baptisms in St James in the period in question.

Now this is a long shot and apparenlty Family Search may have the records (Micro Film of the Church of the Latter Day Saints) there was a so called German Church in Dublin who specialised in rushed marriages, usually of a milatery natue, marriages with little formality or questions asked, there is a hard copy of the registers available to purchase or was, they were declared legal after a court case. Here is a little info on them, not sure they are on the transcription sites, maybe Find My Past. Your could contact the Dublin City Library, Pearse Street branch and ask about it and also the Verscoyle name. Link to some info froma  message board which has links. https://www.boards.ie/discussion/2057248617/rev-shulze-the-german-churc…;

Happy New Year
