Patrick Mcguirk - Westport, Co Mayo

MayoAghagower (Mayo)

Hi all, my name is Catherine Rodgers (nee Mcguirk),

Some time ago I reached out for any information on my family tree, the branch I was looking for at the time was the Mortimer family from Westport but I'm now searching for any information on my grandfather Patrick Mcguirk (or variation such as Mcquirk / Mcgurk / Mcqurk) who married Anne Mortimer in Westport in around 1875.

How would I go about finding when and where Patrick was born? Unfortunately I don't have any other information other than he died and was buried in Lecanvey, Co Mayo.

I'd be grateful for any information, thanks in advance,

Kath

Kath:

I found a church marriage record in 1875 in Oughaval RC parish but there was no civil record that I could lcoate.

I searched the subscription site Roots Ireland and did not find a baptismal record for a Patrick McGuirk/McGurk with father Patrick.  There are two possibilities for not finding the record. The Oughaval RC records start in 1845 and Patrick possibly was baptized before 1845 in Oughaval parish. The other possibility is that he was baptized in another parish that no longer has records back to the 1840s and 1850s.

I did see civil birth records for his two daughters Alice in 1877 and Catherine in 1881.

There’s a transcription on rootsireland of Patrick McQuirk and Ann Mortimer’s 1 March 1875 Civil Marriage Record. He as 22, she was 20. He was from Westport, she was from Lecanvey. His father was Patrick, hers was George Mortimer. Patrick Jr. was an engine driver; Patrick Sr. and George were farmers. Witnessses: Austin Mortimer, Bridget Mortimer. Marriage was registered in Westport district, Mayo. There’s a notation “Westport RC.”

You should be able to see the register page at irishgenealogy.ie.
