Patrick McGinley (b. 1803) of Meenaneary

Greetings everyone,

Patrick (b.1803) of Meenaneary had three sons named Patrick (b. 1819), Andrew (b.1824) and Michael (b.1828). Michael emigrated to the US in 1847, then married Sarah Devinny (sp?) of who was from Dungloe.

Michael's brothers (Patrick (b.1819) and Andrew (b.1824)) were not known to have emigrated. Unfortunately, neither Patricks (b.1803 nor b.1824) wives names are certain. But Patrick's (b. 1824) son (naturally named Patrick (b.1860)..ha ha.) was married to Anne Byrne/O'Byrne.

I have completed a great deal of online research (i.e. RootsIreland, Flax Growers, Tithe Applotment & Griffith's Valuation, Nat'l Archives of Ireland, to name a few) and have found the 1901 & 1911 census' whereby Patrick (b. 1824) was living with his son (Patrick b. 1860), wife Anne Byrne (O'Byrne) and grandchildren. Aged 92!!

I am planning a trip to the Donegal area in August 2021, thus would love some local assistance, as available/interested. Additionally, any information I can gather prior to the trip would be sincerely appreciated.

I will alert our HQ regarding your trip.

As you likely know from all your research, there are no Glencolmkille RC parish records online and whatever records exist starting 1880 or later are held at the local level.

I looked at the 1857 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Glencolumbkille civil parish and the only McGinley listed in Meenaneary was Charles McGinley.

This Charles McGinley died in 1874 see fourth record and presumably the Patrick McGinley shown as the informant was the 1824 Patrick McGinley. Likely Charles was the older brother to Patrick McGinley and Patrick took over the lease. Not sure what happened to the widow.

The 1824 Patrick McGinley died in 1917 and was shown as 98 years old.

I had to postpone my trip (as above) due to Covid-19.

However, I will be visiting the area and would genuinely appreciate any local assistance that may be available. Dates: 8Apr-14Apr (11th & 12th work best). Is that enough time?

Hi Susan,

Just to let you know that are a few volunteers who are busy trying their best to source a friendly and helpful Glencolumkille person with the local knowledge needed. Although, there is no volunteer in the general area of Glencolumbkille at present, fingers crossed someone local might be willing to meet up with you for a few minutes when you travel to the area on one of these dates given above.

Because this message is currently being advertised in the Glencolumkille area, I am attaching this "McGinley from Meenaneary, Glencolumbkille" presentation here (BELOW), so that anyone interested from that locality can see the research that has been completed so far, and most importantly show the Google Map location of the McGinley family homestead in Meenaneary that was in existence back in the 1850’s.

Hopefully a good Samaritan from the area will come forward to help, however failing that, there's always google maps on your smartphone – by clicking on the blue links in the presentation, you can drive directly to the McGinley location anyhow. The local people from the area I hear are extremely friendly and by simply chatting to someone when you are visiting, I guarantee you will not be disappointed.

We determined that my great grandfather...Eugene Owen Gillespie...was born in Meenaneary on October 17, 1866. His father was James Gillespie and his mother was Bridget Gillespie nee Cannon.

We are trying to determine where my great grandmother...Mary Gillespie nee McGinley was born. We think she was born in the Glencomcille area. Her date of birth is estimated to be February 1, 1868 (DOB on her death certificate). She died in Winter Park, Florida on February 17, 1960 and is buried in Philadelphia.

She married my great grandfather on August 15, 1894 in Philadelphia. Officiating in the presence of their wedding was Michael Gillespie and Annie McGinley.

They had four children. James (born 1895), Eugene (born 1897), Anna (born 1899) and my grandmother Mary (born 1902). When my grandmother was born, they lived at 313 West Penn Street in Philadelphia.

The sponsors for their baptism at St. Vincent de Paul Church in Philadelphia were: James Gillespi and Mary McGill (James), Daniel Moriarity and Mary Burns (Eugene), John McCue and Annie McCue (Anna) and Dennis McGlynn and Mary McGonagle (Mary).

Please forgive me for any errors/ommissions. My wife is much better at this than me. My Mom is 89 years old and we are trying to find the birthplace of her grandmother.

We don't have RC church records for the Glencolumbkille area. Civil registration of births started in 1864. Many immigrants changed their year of birth when they came to their new country. I searched the free site www.irishgenealogy.ie for Mary McGinley births from 1864-1868 in the Glencolumbkille area and found five records. I will let you review the records (note scroll down on each link until you locate the Mary McGinley record) and see if you can see any clues. I don't believe any of the records showed February 1 as the birth date.

If they followed the naming tradition then Eugene (Owen) would have been the name of the maternal grandfather. The Irish name for James would be Seamus.

You have me somewhat confused but to clarify if they followed the normal naming pattern, the first son would be named after the paternal grandfather, the second son would be named after the maternal grandfather and if there was a third son,, he would be named after the father.
