Patrick Malone, census 1926

Kilbeacanty (Galway)

Puzzled by what I found in the new census. Ended up with more questions than answers. My Patrick Malone, who lived his entire adult life in Cloughjordan, Co. Tipperary, and died there in 1936, had previously stated in the 1901 and 1911 censuses that he hailed from Co. Tipperary as his wife, yet now he appears to be from Galway?!

Tried searching for records of a Patrick Malone born around 1840s/50s in Co. Galway to a parent named James (taken from his marriage certificate) in Nenagh last night but nothing comes up.

Any idea of why this could be? Why the sudden change?!

Ian,

Curious why you think this is the same Patrick Malone. The 1926 census has him born in 1875 not 1840/50. The age differences to children in the 1926 census does not suggest a father.

Ian/Mary:

Age in 1926 census was 79 not 49.

We don't know Patrick's mother name and a baptismal record can't be found (so far). I don't know who signed the census form but possibly John or Bridget provided the information and they believed Patrick was born in Co. Galway. I think this is a situation where you will never know why Galway was shown.

Thank you very much, Mary and Roger, for taking the time to reply and for all the information you provided. I truly appreciate it!

That is indeed the death entry for my Patrick Malone. I had been searching for years without success but never managed to find the one for Mary Bruder (Malone), so many thanks for that.

I believe I may finally have solved the mystery regarding Patrick's place of birth. Mary was from Cloughjordan, and all of their children were born there, so it seems clear that Patrick misreported his place of birth in the 1901 and 1911 censuses as being from Tipperary too.

When I first looked at the 1926 census yesterday, I tried to decipher the townland name and initially read it as “Derrygoodan,” which led nowhere. I didn’t pursue it further and assumed it might instead refer to the origin of one of the children in Tipperary. However, I then began searching through my DNA matches for Malones in Galway and found a couple connected to a Malone family in “Derrygoolin", which I already suspected might be related to me through the Malone side. It now seems clear that this is the townland listed in the census, which I had simply misread.

The common relative of these matches is John Malone (born c. 1844), who married Margaret Leahy. On Patrick’s marriage certificate, his father is recorded as James. One of the trees I came across also names a James as John’s father, though without supporting documentation. This leads me to think that John from Derrygoolin may have been Patrick’s brother.

Unfortunately, I haven’t yet been able to find any records that confirm this relationship. Haven't found any birth/baptismal records for Patrick, his brother John, or his would-be father James. Just the marriage of John and his death certificate. I think what makes it more difficult is that Derrygoolan lies on the border between Counties Clare and Galway.

For reference, Patrick’s reported ages are as follows:

  • 1901 Census (Windmill, Cloughjordan): 55 (→ c. 1846)
  • 1911 Census (Cloughjordanpark): 60 (→ c. 1851)
  • 1926 Census (Cloughjordanpark): 79 (→ c. 1847)
  • Death certificate (1936): 78 (→ c. 1858)

Taken together, these suggest a birth sometime in the 1840s–early 1850s, which aligns well with John’s estimated birth around 1844.
