Does anyone have a passenger list for the ship Newcastle departed London 1877 bound for Queensland Australia? My IRISH great grandmother (Mary Griffin) was a passenger.

Thank you so much!! The Ireland Reaching Out site is amazing and beyond my expectations.
My great grandmother was definitely Irish. The ship would have been the "Newcastle" and not the other ship.. She married in 1878 aged 21 (her birthday was in August so she would have turned 20 in August 1877) and so the arrival date and her age are consistent with other information. It is interesting that her birth date is given as "abt" 1858. It is possible that Mary was illiterate.
Do you have any suggestions as to why she left Ireland in 1877 to travel alone to Australia?
I have been reading the book "The Kerry Girls" and realise that conditions in Ireland in the 19th century were desperate. She was very brave to do this on her own. Thank you for your help.
Is there any way of finding out where she was working after arrival in Brisbane?
Hannah,
I think your original message was searching Rodell Bay which was why I included info on that ship. I agree she was probably on Newcastle.
You might want to check with a Queensland historic society or the government.
Birthdates weren't celebrated in Ireland so birth years could range 10+/- years on documents. The birth/ baptismal records were accurate.
I looked at the ship record for the year with everyone listed. the image is not on line! Hannah all you say is correct. It does say in the comment entry crossed out usually that means they didn't travel but they all did. Can you look in your TROVE site to get the entry information. I t should t tell you in that document.
Hannah, I have attached a list of all Maria/Mary Griffin's who arrived in Qld 1848 -1912 with the names of ships. I cannot find your Mary Griffin on the ship Newcastle.
The link below will take you to a page - screenshot attached - listing the surnames beginning with "G". Once you find the name, you can then scroll across to the links, which includes the original passenger shipping lists.
If you prefer, I have downloaded the original "Newcastle" passenger list, but the file is too large to attach here and would need to be emailed. Hope this info helps.
