Mintoe,

Are you certain about that spelling of O'Dubghaill? I popped that surname and some variations of it into the Roots Ireland program, and received the reply that "the surname that you entered is either misspelt or it does not occur at all in any of our databases".

Regards,

Carolyn

My understanding is that [Ó] Dubhghaill/Dubgaill eventually became the surname Doyle -  a very common surname.in the East of Ireland, mainly Leinster. The original meaning was something like 'dark foreigners' - dubh is the Irish for the colour black . Said to have been descendants of Danish 'Vikings'

Mintoe,

The surname O'Dubhgaill is still used today. An internet search provides information about the surname.

Cóilín Ó Dubhghaill - Wikipedia

There is an acting family with the surname O'Dubhgaill from Connemara.

Hi Patricia from what I gathered from another site is that the name migrated in the 12 th century to Scotland to Bedford  England  and became anglicised to odell and established the village there of same name ,I read also that it became Doyle,and a few other anglicised names
