Ballingary  and anywhere else in limerick .I already know my great grand parents were from Cork, but as I keep being told my surname isn't Irish yet my name is an old sect

Mintoe,

Tithe records for County Waterford have a John O'Dell in Killosserra, Dungarvan, C. Waterford in 1829.

Irish Ancestors  www.irishancestors.com ; have the surname "O'Dell" with variants, showing "Head of Household" for the years 1851-1853, mainly in County Cork. One is recorded for Charleville, Co. Cork which is only a short distance from Ballingarry.

Hi Mintoe

I think this name came into Ireland in Cromwellian Times and certainly the O'Dell from Ballingarry certainly did. They were extensive land holders in Co. Limerick and lived in the Castle in Ballingarry, Co. Limerick but I always thought that they came from Waterford. In the 1800 's a Thomas O dell was trying to get sponsership from the government to emigrate to Canada and bring about 100 people with him.

Thank you Quain that's something I hadn't heard ,my gran only knew of her parents coming from County Cork  .I found out about O'Dell being in limerick and ballingarry from a volunteer on here and also about odelville etc  .Waterford could be a new connection  to my great great grandad who was also named Samuel O'Dell  my great grandads father .kind regards Mark
