O'Brien Mackey

Looking for information prior to 1853 on Patrick O'Brien and Mary Mackey who left Ireland via Liverpool in 1853. They were travelling with Patrick's nieces Mary and Bridget who were about 10 at the time. They arrived in Hobart Tasmania on 27 April 1853 and worked for Thomas Anstey at Anstey Barton near Oatlands.

They were married inNew Quay; County of Clare; Diocese of Galway on11 July 1852.

Dear Justin:  Thank you for your post to the Ireland Reaching Out message board and welcome!  The parish registers for New Quay begin in 1847 so unfortunately, there is probably not a lot of information before then.  However, you may be able to access other information through the Clare Library website.  The parish registers are available online through the National Library of Ireland and the link is below:

https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0622. You may also look through neighboring parishes as often families baptized in more than one parish.

Also the Clare Library website is another excellent resource that you should definitely look through.

The website link is below:  http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclare/genealogy/genealog.htm.

You may also want to create a Chronicle for your ancestor through the XO Chronicles tab at the top of this page.  Please feel free to do so as often, information shared can lead to collaborations with other members who are searching for the same family.  If you have any other questions, please let me know.  The very best of luck!

Kind regards,

Jane

That's great Jane thankyou!

I'm planning on visiting Ireland next June - Clare Library is on my list of must visit places.  Is there anywhere else you think you should visit for my research?

Thanks

Hi Justin:

that’s great that you’re planning on coming over.  It will help your research.  My advice is to gather as much as you can from where they settled in Australia through BMD certificates, church records and other documents.  That will give you a good focus when you visit with your research.  Keep in touch via this thread and I will find a volunteer to assist you when you arrive.

All the best,

Jane

Hi Justin, Michelle and Jane

Sorry for the gap since you posted your search. I’m interested in Patrick O’Brien as I am researching my great great grandmother Bridget O’Brien who was transported to Tasmania as a convict in 1851. She was 20 and in one of her records, there was mention of a brother Patrick. She was born Ballymacahill, Clare to Michael O’Brien and Mary Griffey in 1831. Her life in Tasmania was one of great struggle. She gave birth to three children who were taken to the Orphans School as their mother couldn’t care for them due to severe mental health issues. She was to spend much of her life in the New Norfolk asylum. I’m the great-grand-daughter of Sarah, her youngest who grew up in the Orphans School and then lost all contact with her siblings through no fault of their own. Sarah made the most of her circumstances and went on to have 6 children who thrived, not the least because of her guidance and support.

I would wondered if you knew who Patrick’s parents or siblings were?

Hi everyone,

Sorry for the long gap - I don't receive notifications of anything posted here.

My trip to Ireland didn't reveal anything, unfortunately. I did get in contact with Ralph Mackey upon my return who had traced his relatives back to Ballydoora in Carran. The property that Pat and Mary had in Tunnack was called Ballydurragh, sounds the same, just spelt differently - so that ties back.

@LeaslyTasmania, I don't have any records of siblings or parents - but you never know there could be a connection, although Ballymacahill is a long way from Ballydoora - so on the face of it maybe not.

My recent DNA results through FTDNA, show my bloodline to be connected to the O'Dea family. Back in the 1000s the O'Brien's and O'Dea's were very close and fort battles together and would often adopt each other's children. But I don't know when my O'Dea ancestor became an O'Brien.

An interesting piece of information is that Anstey Barton mentioned above was purchased, picked up and taken to Kettering and used to build this little shack: https://www.domain.com.au/82-ferry-road-kettering-tas-7155-2018709599&n…;  you can have it for $6 mill.
