O'Brien from Clogheen

Hi, for the past four years I have been trying to confirm the maiden name of the mother of my grandmother.

My grandmother was Johanna O'Brien who was born on 16th February 1894. She was also known as Hannah or Annie. She married John Butler in August 1916 and on her marriage certificate it shows her father was Patrick O'Brien. They were married in the Clogheen Workhouse. My mother (Annie) was born 3 days later. All this information has been corroborated.

I am not sure if Johanna was actually born in Clogheen or a neighboring town.

I have two prospective names for Johanna's mother, Hanrahan and O'Callaghan. Both Patrick's were married to Bridget's. One in Ballyporeen the other in Limerick, which seems a long distance away but is still in the province of Munster.

I am buried in downloaded paperwork but cannot be totally sure of my great-grandmother's name. Any assistance with my 'brick wall' would appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Marriage cert for John Butler and Hannah O'Brien

It appears Annie was born three days before the marriage and she was registered in her mothers maiden name (O) Brien 23rd August 1916

Birth of Hanna 1893 (14th May)

Ballinhalla is in the townland of Clogheen Tipperary, I did not find the other record you mentioned but it seems unlikely that Hanna was born outside of Clogheen. Did her husband John return from the war in France? Were there any other children in this marriage? I think it is likely that Hanna's birth is as above and her mother was Bridget Hanrahan. Do you know when Patrick O'Brien died as there are a few Patrick's of the name.

Hi Eileen, thank you for your efforts regarding me trying to find my great-grandmother. My apologies for not looking back earlier.

My grandmother, Hannah on my mothers birth certificate, had 8 children in total with my grandad John Butler. I sent the BDM in Dublin both the above copies and they 'copied and pasted' them to an original birth certificate giving my mother Annie the name O'Brien (which is correct as the parents weren't actually married at the time) even though she was know all her life and married using the name Butler.

Though I have narrowed my great-grandmother's maiden name to Hanrahan, I am still not convinced that it is correct. My grandmother's correct name was Johanna, she told me that herself. Her probate showing the address that she lived at for 30 yrs show's Johanna Butler. That is correct, as I lived there too for some time. So Annie and Hanna were not short names for anything else. The birth certificate above also show's her DOB as 14th May 1893. I remember her birthday being in February. On the 1939 register it show's 16th February 1894.The wedding certificate show's her being 20 yrs which maked her birth year 1896. I have checked both - and more.

I am trying to find her mother's birth name so I can continue with my tree. I am in my 70's and trying to finish an ancestry album that I can leave for my family. At the moment I have a big block with nothing in it.

Kind regards

Maureen
