Hi Magnolia

Dublin is a tricky place as it has grown so much, with over a million living there now. I checked the Irish phone book on line and got one Dublin hit and 27 nationwide mostly in Wicklow and neighbouring counties. It is a very unusual name.

This is the link to the phone book online but someone recently got in touch with me from outside the country and could not access it. http://www.eirphonebook.ie/# Be sure to select residential as business is the default. There is one business number. I searched Nuzum House as I have a memory of such a place but not what I was thinking came up, however in Google Images there is an interesting photo of an old business in Dublin Nuzum Bros in Dublin 2 I think.

The name is so unusual you might find a Dublin person you could message privately on FB.

Sorry it has taken me so long to reply. Thanks you so much for the information.  I will be traveling to Ireland in  June. I would like to contact the family you told me about.  Could you find out what Nuzum they are from. I am from a John Nuzum and we are the sixth generation. Thanks again.

My great (x3) grandmother was Sara Nuzum of Philadelphia (1777-1851), who married Gardiner Leonard (1771-1851) of County Wexford, Ireland.

The parents of Sara were Richard Nuzum (1734-1822) and Hannah Worrall (1736-1791).  My Nuzums may have also originated from Co. Wexford, from the information I've found.  The families may have owned land in Dublin.

Sara died in 1851, in Marion Co., West Virginia. My great (x2) grandparents were John Allen Leonard and Josina Evans, and my grandparents John Albertus Denison and Bertha Leonard, who all lived in West Virginia.

Nuzum family researchers, feel free to contact me.  I live in Ireland myself now and wouldn't mind an excuse to do a research trip in Wexford if you think we're related.

To: Kate Bell,   We are definetly related.  I am 6th generation, Perry C. Nuzum.

My grandparents were Robert and Virginia.  I have a book on the history and

geneology from the beginning.  I found Sarah's name and date of death.

This is so neat!  I got to visit Ireland in June of last year.  I loved it. Wish I

could have found you then. I would have liked to have met you.  Please feel free

to email me if you want any more info on our ancestors.  wingslike_eagles@aol.com.

HI, When looking for my great-great-geat aunts Redmond (Margaret and ?Mary), I stumbled on a record of James Nuzum (that name stuck in my mind from this site) having a child with wife Margaret Redmond. Birthdate 25 May 1823 in Johnstown, Arklow, Dublin diocese, County Wexford/Wicklow. Name is really hard to read; sponsor might be Mary McDonnell. My ancestors come from south of Arklow in Garrydaniel. Who knows--we may be related?

Richard Nuzum and Hannah Worrall, cited by Kate Bell above, were my great X5 grandparents. His father was the Thomas mentioned by someone else. The Nuzums were Huguenots who fled France probably in the early 17th century. Thus when Thomas and his family emigrated to America as Dissenters in the mid-18th century it was the second time they emigrated in search of religious freedom.

There is an interesting theory on the origin of the name, perhaps simply a derivation of Newsome, OR, as French peasants at this time did not have last names, when they first arrived in Ireland, probably in Ulster, and were asked who they were, they may have replied in French "Nous sommes......." (We are...), which could have easily become Nuzum, especially with the northern accent. My great-grandmother was a Nuzum from Marion County, WV and we always thought it was a German name. Interestingly, her father, a Civil War veteran, was named after the French ruler, Lewis Napoleon Nuzum.

I saw mentioned twice that there is a book about the Nuzums. Can anyone tell me more or where I might find a copy?

Lastly, Kate Bell, my wife and I are coming to Ireland in April to visit our distant Ulster family, Cunninghams, Jamisons, Pickerings and Blacks. I'd love to meet a direct Nuzum cousin, will you be around then?

Thanks to all,

Jeff Sandy
