Noble of Tyrone (Strabane)

Hi there,

I am currently researching a line in my tree. My Great Great Grandfather is Christopher Noble who is the son of John Noble and Dorothea Dillon. He died in Govan, Glasgow on the 27th of May 1894 aged 59 years of age.

I have found document listing a birth of a Christopher Noble in Strabane to a William Noble and a Dorcas Noble on the 26th of October 1836.

Dorcas Dillon : Family tree by Erika HUNTER (ehunter369) - Geneanet

I am trying to confirm that the birth of Christopher is correct and if so, does anyone have any links to websites where I can possible pad out his tree in Ireland and also look for the next generation up.

I also found a birth record for a Dorothea Dillon in Jersey of all places. It is in French and it looks like her father was in the Army.

Any links or assistance is greatly appreciated.

I assume the information about Christophers parents being John & Dorothea has come from his death certificate. Sometimes there are errors on death certificates (due to the informant not knowing the deceased’s parents personally for example). Christopher and Jane married in Paisley Free Kirk in 1868. That certificate gives his parents as William Noble (iron moulder) deceased & Dorothea Dillon (deceased). That's more likely to be accurate as it should be first hand information.

So you know both parents were dead by 1868. Death registration only started in Ireland in 1864 so if they died there, there may be no record. On the other hand there weren’t many iron moulders in Ireland so I wonder if William & Dorothea may have moved to Scotland for work, and died there. Might be worth checking Scottish censuses for when Christopher moved to Scotland and if anyone else went with him. He gave his age as 27 in 1868 so born c 1841. How do you know he was born in Tyrone?

Hi Elwyn, Thanks for the response. It is very much appreciated.

I ordered the death certificate of Christopher from Scotland's People and I transcribed it onto the original post.

The iron moulder profession is a great shout. Thank you. I would tend to agree.

I have looked at census records but nothing seems to match. I have drawn many blanks.

In 1841 there are no matches for Christopher or Dorothea / Dorothy Noble

In 1851 there are no matches for Christopher Noble. None for Dorothea or Dorothy Noble. Loads for William Noble, which you would expect, but nothing that stands out to check out formally and nothing with additional names that look interesting.

In 1861 there is a Christopher Noble aged 27 living with Rosanna (I think) the head of the house. It is in Abbey Burgh, Paisley which is where he was married. That doesn't add up. I haven't saw a Rosanna in the tree yet.

In 1871 this is the first time that Christopher shows up. He was born in "Ireland" on this document. He is in the Tradeston area of Glasgow. 43 Clarence Street (Back land). He is aged 33 here, Wife Jane (Murray) is 18. Son John is 1 and a boarder called John Goldie is living with them. He is a relation of his wife Jane Murray, The son John is listed as born in Dunbartonshire (5th November 1869), so they've moved there prior to Glasgow and had a son. He is a Quay labourer as is John Goldie.

In 1881 he is now registered 14 Alma Street, that was in Govan, Glasgow. He is born in "Ireland".Listed with him is Jane his wife, his daughter Dorothea (9) Archibald his son (5) and "John Gouldy" who I presume is the John Goldie from 10 years prior.

By 1891 he is now in 153 Blackburn Street which is located in the Plantation part of Kinning Park in Glasgow. He is listed as "Cristopher" and as a widow. Born in Ireland, he is there with his son Archibald (15). Its the last two rows on the page, so I don't know if others might be listed. Dorothea is now not with them. She is married by this point.

Deaths in Renfrewshire between 1855 and 1868 for William Noble or John Noble only show infants. The Old Parish Registers show nothing of interest either as do the Catholic registers.

Death records for Dorothea Noble show no returns either.

I took the Tyrone information form that tree that was posted online, see the link, however, I need to try and corroborate this. As always, you cannot take other folks posts and guarantee they are 100% accurate. Here is the link: Dorcas Dillon : Family tree by Erika HUNTER (ehunter369) - Geneanet

I am thinking that there will be a limit to the information that will be held on them. I would be happy to get a place name in Ireland for them, so that the next time I am over I can visit there.

Again, thanks for taking time to post.

MacEoghain

There are several trees on Ancestry which have the family as you know.  I see some entires that look questionable but many have Christopher born or baptised 26.10.1836 in Camus (Strabane). That looks to be a Church of Ireland record. There’s a copy in PRONI in Belfast so you could check that out if you wanted.

Griffiths Valuation has just 1 William Noble in Camus in 1858, living in a house and yard (plot 183) on Main St Strabane. He was deleted around 1864 according to the Valuation Revision records (with the whole row of houses noted as to be taken down in 1870).

Hi Elwyn,

Thanks for this information.

I will check to see if theres a copy of the PRONI record online. If not, I may need to head over at some point for a look in person. Any excuse for a trip, eh? - ha ha.

I am going to check out Griffiths evaluation too. See if I can find this.

There are loads on Noble records in Fermanagh. I always get drawn to them. I thought the unusual name of Dorcas/ Darkey/ Dorothea Dillon (Noble) may have helped shed some light, but not really.

Thanks again for your help.

MacEoghain

MacEoghain,

Some of the on-line trees have Nobles in Fermanagh in them, notably around Lisnaskea. I’d be surprised if they were the same family as the Strabane family 60 miles away. I think someone’s been guessing.

Thanks Elwyn. Good info again.

I found the death of Dorothea Noble in 1866 in GRONI. Main Street. Her daughter Anne Brown was present. I have her daughter Anne marrying a Mark Vasey in England.....I need to now research that as I took it from elsewhere.

MacEoghain

That death fits nicely with the 1868 Scottish marriage certificate information. Tells you that the property in Griffiths in Main St, Strabane was surely your William, and also that he almost certainly died before 1.1.1864 when death registration started in Ireland. If he was Church of Ireland, you may find his burial record in the Camus burial records in PRONI.

Thanks Elwyn.

I am on PRONI. I will see if I can find burial records. Couldn't see this earlier.

MacEoghain

MacEoghain,

The PRONI records aren't on-line. You need to go in person to look them up (or get a  Belfast based researcher to do it for you).
