Nicholas Power and Mary Sullivan Families

I live in New Zealand and looking for information regarding the above families from Mitchelstown,. A great grandfather and his brother emigrated from Mitchelstown to Australia in 1863. Their names were James Patrick Power, baptised 7 February 1841  and Maurice Power, baptised 16 July 1838. Their parents were Nicholas Power and Mary Sullivan for whom I found a record of  marriage 16 February 1836 in Mitchelstown. (I do not know if this marriage is the correct one for our couple). I have found records for 2 other children from the family a Robert and Mary both baptised on 21 September 1836.James's son Nicholas came on to New Zealand.

I would be most grateful if anyone is able to provide more information regarding the Power and Sullivan families.

Thank you in anticipation.

Liesabeth, If you go to askaboutireland, you can see who his neighbors were and how much land and/or buildings he had.  You can also see a map showing the location.

Liseabeth,

There might be another Maurice baptized 4 Jan 1844 to Nicholas Power and Mary Sullivan. So, it could be that the one born in 1838 died young. The paid site, Roots Ireland, shows the marriage and all four births as you mentioned above, and I found the 1844 Maurice whilst looking. I think that there might have been a transcription error from the original baptism register page. You will see the 1844 Maurice on left side of page, second entry under January. It looks to me like his father's name is "Nich"...compare that to another father four entries below him where Michael is abbreviated "Mick". Roots Ireland transcribed the father as Michael, but it could be Nicholas.

Additionally, there are no other baptisms for a Michael Power and Mary Sullivan which leads me to believe it was an error as typically, in those times, there was more than one child born.

Finally, if you do look at the register page at register.nli.ie; you will see that there is an issue with what they uploaded under the different years. If you put in 1844, January; the page for 1834 comes up. So, you just have to scroll around to locate Jan 1844!

Regards,

Carolyn

Thank you Carolyn,

i have done these things also, looked through all the listings in Griffiths Valuations for Power and Sullivan names in the parish of Brigown.

There are a few but I am unable to link them to  ? my Nicholas and Mary to take my family tree back further.

I have looked through the physical Parish registers for Mitchelstown on Roots Ireland and not found any legible conclusive results apart from

the 4 x baptisms and the marriage for a Nicholas Power and Mary Sullivan .16 February 1836 . I think these are my correct Gt Gt Grandparents

but really need a way to confirm this .

I came to a brick wall, that is why a placed a messages on this message board.

Regards

Liesabeth

Liesabeth

Thank you again for all the help, but I am no further ahead except for the information from the Griffiths Valuations.

Does anyone know anything more about this Power Sullivan family domiciled in Brigown / Mitchelstown n the 1830's.
