Newman Family of County Laois

Hi I am trying to find out any information on the Newman family of County Laois. My great great grandmother was Deborah Newman who married Jacob Cantwell in 1836 in Roskelton County Laois. i believe that her father may have been named Kilner Newman. Witnesses to her marriage was Kilner Newman and William Newman. Any assistance on finding out any further information regarding this family would be greatly appreciated

Tara:

I assume your ancestors were Church of Ireland. I did not see the marriage record on the subscription site Roots Ireland. Also, no baptismal records for children. The Griffiths Valuation records from the early 1850s show a Jacob Cantwell in Kylebeg townland in Durrow civil parish. Could this be a record for your ancestor?

There's an 1846 marriage here for a Kilner Newman in Rosskelton who was a bachelor. His father's name was also Kilner. So I suspect Kilner junior here might be Deborah's brother. And so her father would have been Kilner too.

No Newmans in Rosskelton in Griffiths (1850) but there was one farming nearby in Boley Upper, so probably the same family.

There was a Kilner Boley in Boley in the tithes in 1829. They may have had land in more than one townland.

Many thanks Roger, Elwyn and Eileen. I greatly appreciate all your assistance with my research. Roger, Deborah appears to have been church of Ireland and I do have her marriage certificate to Jacob Cantwell, that I purchased through the church many years ago. The griffiths Valuation records most probably is my ancestor as he lived in the Durrow/Boley area of Laois.

Elwyn, this marriage certificate for Kilner and Annie has probably confirmed for me that Kilner is Deborah’s brother, as the witness to this marriage was Jacob Cantwell (Deborah’s husband).

Eileen, many thanks for this death certificate, it is for my great grandmother. William was the only one of her children still residing in Ireland at the time of her death, the other sons had immigrated to England, America and Australia. Her only daughter died prior to her death and is buried behind her parents headstones in the Michael and All Angels Churchyard in Abbeyleix.
