hi,

Did your g-Grandafther grow up in the City of Tuam, if so what Street ??

If he grew up on a farm, do you know the name of a Townland ??

What year did he emigrate to Mass ??

Did he have children, if so what were their names and when were they born ??

Did your g-Grandfather live at Malden, Middlesex, Mass in 1942 ??

Did he work for Boston Elevated in First St. South Boston ??

If so that gives me Date of Birth in MAR 1879.

YES Sean, the Patrick Newell who lived in Malden, MA was my great grandfather.  He did work for Boston Elevator.  He did grow up in Tuam.  I don't know the street or Townland.  The Townland may have been Cloonkeely where he was born according to the civil birth reg. #37, pg. 536.  I've been to the parish (Kilbannon) where he was baptised and where I'm told the family worshipped. His arrival to the USA I believe from what I can find was in 1897.  He gave his birth as 17 March (as I'm told many Irish did when they came to the states), but actually his b. record says 24 Jul 1877.  His children were:  Mary b. 1905, Mabel Rose b. 1908 (my grandmother), Alfred b. 1909, Theresa b. 1913, Alice b. 1915, Lawrence b. 1920.

Are we cousins?  Do you live in Ireland?

Thank you for your reply Sean.  I am hoping to learn more of my Irish ancestry.

Most grateful,

Diane

hi,

Here are the birth records for some of the children.

I would join the mailing list for Galway and ask for help there - they have local knowledge and better resources than I do. Here is the link.

RE: Are we cousins?

Not that I know of.

RE: Do you live in Ireland?

No, my Dad was from there - I just volunteered to do some research as they had no-one dealing with the enquiries.

hi,

Griffiths Valuation was a kind of Census substitute taken around 1855 in Galway.

These are all the NEWELLs in Galway at the time.

There were a number of John NEWELLs farming in the area, your ancestor John would have been about 30yo at the time.

But the land may have been in his Fathers name still ??

It depended on how many plots they farmed, each plot would have had a house.

There were also BYRNEs in the area...

These are the NEWELL families in 1901.

If you can find both families in the same Townland and/or Parish, they are probably your ancestors.

People didn't travel far in those days to find a wife/husband.

Sean,

I do have Patrick Newell's Nat'l Rec., and yes his wife was Hannah (original Johanna FINN).  Finally got a nice day here so I've been working in the yard but will check out all these links later.  Thank you sooo much for your time and research.  You are a truly kindred spirit!!

I have visited the Kilbannon parish, where he was baptized and where his family is said to have worshipped. Based on the information I have, I believe he arrived in the USA in 1897.

Wilmertark

He was christened and his family is supposed to have worshiped at the Kilbannon parish, which I

geometry dash breeze have visited. It is likely that he landed in the United States around 1897, according to the data I have.

Since Michael Newell and Mary Byrne were likely born in the 1840s, search Catholic parish registers for Tuam, County Galway, and surrounding big tower tiny square areas.
