Nancy Denief

My 2xggrandmother, Nancy Denief came to Newfoundland from Kilkenny with her two sisters, Honora and Bridget. She married Thomas Fitzpatrick, and her first child was born in Newfoundland in 1829. Would love to hear from anyone researching the Denief family in Ireland. I have hit the proverbial brick wall. The information I do have came from family stories.

Bonnie:

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Denief is an unusual surname in Ireland. There were no Deniefs in Kilkenny in the 1849 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Co. Kilkenny. However, in the 1833 Tithe listings, I located a Patrick Denief and John Denief in Knocknaboola townland in Jerpointchurch civil parish. http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/results.jsp?…

I then went back to the 1849 Griffiths for Jerpointchurch parish and found four Deneeffe records. So I think your family came from this parish.

Do you know the religious denomination for your ancestors?

Thank you for your reply; I have been searching for years for Deniefs in Ireland.  When I visited there in the mid-90's, I found gravesites for a a few in the Thomastown churchyard, so now I have another parish to check out.  I think the family was Catholic.

My 3x great grandmother was Honora Denief.  She married a John Collins.  I believe the Denief family to be Catholic as well.  I can’t find any information on her parents.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks.

Hello!

Honora Denief is my 4x great-grandmother also. My family line is through her son, James Collins and his wife, Margaret Masters. I would love to connect and maybe learn more! :)

I just tried to go back and edit my previous reply, and it turns out you can't do that, haha... Natalie, I am also in Nova Scotia :) My family are from Deer Lake, Newfoundland. I'm not certain if you can message folks on here directly- and if you can, so sorry... I'm doing this on my mobile!- but if you or anyone else would like to see if we might have family tree info to exchange, you're welcome to email me at antlefamilytree@gmail.com :)

Natalie Scutz:  Sorry but I too have very little information on the Deief sisters but here's what Ithink I know but have been unable to prove:  Nancy, Ellen and Honora were the Denief sisters who came to Newfoundland probably in the late 1700's.  Nancy married Thomas Fitzpatrick, Ellen married Pierce (brother of Thomas) Fitzpatrick and Honora married Collins. That's all I have really.  Sorry I couldn't be more help.

I am a descendent of Honora and John Collins.  I live in Nova Scotia and I have also hit a brick wall with The Denief  side of the family.
