My Irish heritage - Meath, Limerick, and unknown parts of Ireland
I realize this initial post may be too general and high level to generate any new leads but thought it might provide a good starting point. I'll be following it up with more detailed posts on the individuals mentioned.
Thank-you

Irish Ancestry of Kent Kaufmann
Based on research to date, I am 75% German descent and 25% Irish descent.
My father, Jerome Kaufmann, was of 100% German descent. My mother, Arlene Reynolds is of 50% German descent (maternal side) and 50% Irish descent (paternal side).
I am still investigating the ancestry of my first wife Cynthia Murdock Kaufmann Roop but have found no Irish ancestry to date (appears to be English and German) so likely that our daughter Kaitlin Kaufmann Sheiner has no additional Irish ancestors beyond mine.
I am also still investigating the ancestry of my second wife Zorka Pavlica Kaufmann but have found no Irish ancestry to date (all identified ancestors are Serbian) so likely that our daughters Carson Kaufmann and Nikole Kaufmann Riebel have no additional Irish ancestors beyond mine.
My connection to Ireland is via my 4 great great grandparents (in red below) who are my mother’s paternal great grandparents:
- Kent Jay Kaufmann (1957-
- Arlene Marie Reynolds Kaufmann (1931-2018)
- Leo Henry Reynolds (1902-1953)
- Laurence Matthew Reynolds (1865-1943)
- Patrick Matthew Reynolds (a1830-1918)
- Laurence Reynolds
- Catherine Cunningham Reynolds
- Johanna O’Neill Reynolds (a1841-1900)
- Laurence O’Neill (a1800-1876)
- Nancy/Anna Halpine/Halpin O’Neill (a1811-a1873)
- Patrick Matthew Reynolds (a1830-1918)
- Bridget Merrigan Reynolds (1879-1959)
- Jeremiah Merrigan (1833-1904)
- Bridget Powers Merrigan (1842-1888)
- Laurence Matthew Reynolds (1865-1943)
- Leo Henry Reynolds (1902-1953)
- Arlene Marie Reynolds Kaufmann (1931-2018)
There are some commonalities between my 4 Irish great great grandparents:
- They were all born in Ireland
- They all emigrated from Ireland to United States in the mid 1800s
- All are Catholic
- All ended in rural Iroquois County, Illinois. Near a small town named Ashkum. There is a significant Irish community in this area. Several were among the very first Europeans to settle in the area. And many of their descendants still live in the area.
- All were buried in Ashkum Catholic cemetery
Patrick Matthew Reynolds was the paternal grandfather of my maternal grandfather Leo Reynolds. He was born in Lobinstown, Killary, Meath, Ireland in 1830-1832. Patrick emigrated from Ireland to USA via Liverpool and New York City in 1852, initially settling in New Jersey and then migrating to Illinois. There is no evidence (yet) that any family member emigrated with him however a brother Michael emigrated year later. He married fellow Irish emigree Johanna O’Neill in 1859. Patrick passed in Ashkum, Illinois in 1918 and was buried there.
Johanna O’Neill Reynolds was the paternal grandmother of my maternal grandfather. She was born in Limerick City, Limerick, Ireland in 1841-1842. Johanna emigrated from Ireland to USA in 1849, along with her parents (Laurence O’Neill and Nancy Halpine O’Neill) and 3 siblings (Mary, John, Bridget). She married fellow Irish emigree Patrick Reynolds in 1859. Johanna passed in Ashkum, Illinois in 1900 and was buried there.
Jeremiah “Jerry” Merrigan was the maternal grandfather of my maternal grandfather. I’ve found limited records on him so far but based on those limited records:
- He was born in Ireland in 1833 and emigrated to Illinois, USA in 1864
- Jeremiah married fellow Irish emigree Bridget Powers in Tazewell County, Illinois in 1867
- He passed in Ashkum, Illinois in 1904 and was buried in Ashkum Catholic Cemetery
Bridget Powers Merrigan was the maternal grandmother of my maternal grandfather. Based on the limited records I’ve found so far:
- She was born in Ireland in 1842 and emigrated to Illinois, USA in 1863
- Bridget married fellow Irish emigree Jeremiah Merrigan in Tazewell County, Illinois in 1867
- She passed in Ashkum, Illinois in 1888 and was buried in Ashkum Catholic Cemetery
All of the above individuals and relationships are reflected in FamilySearch and in my main tree in Ancestry.
