My Effin, Limerick Families of the Past

I am looking for information on the CARROLL AND HARTIGAN families in the Effin, Limerick area. My paternal great grand mother was MARIA CARROLL born to JOHN CARROLL andJOHANNA HARTIGAN in EFFIN on January 18, 1847. She was baptized in the Catholic Church in Effin - Our Lady Queen of Peace. The sponsors were THOMAS CARROLL and JOHANNA QUINLAN. Ihave this baptisimal record from Rev. Father Tom Coughlan. Both sponsers may have been relatives.

Maria somehow found her way to Adelaide, South Australia and was married there to JOHN TAYLOR in St. Patrick's in 1868. By 1876 she was in New York City with her 3 children who were all born in Australia. I don't know how or when shearrived in Adelaide. Did she come as a child or as an adult?Would there be any information in your area about people leaving for Australia in the middle eigthteen hundreds? Were they recruited?

Are there any of the ancestors of my great grandmother still living in the Effin area?

Hope to hear from some family, Sincerely, Bunny Taylor Ryczek

Hello Bunny, I am looking over old queries. Maria was born in the worst year of the famine in 1847, referred to as "Black 47" it is possible she was an orphan transported under the Earl Grey Sceme, (Think it is he of the tea) here is a tiny bit I copied from a website I Googled called "sea.muesum"

The Famine Orphan Scheme

Between 1848 and 1850, more than 4,000 young Irish women were resettled in the Australian colonies through the Famine Orphan Scheme. The women, aged 14 to 20, had been orphaned by the famine and were recruited from workhouses across the 32 counties of Ireland. The scheme was devised by Earl Grey, Secretary of State for the Colonies, to relieve overcrowding in the Irish workhouses and to meet the demand for domestic labourers and single young women in the colonies

There is a book on it, you could also try the Limerick Library, I see a few siblings also, a Johanna born in 1853 in Effin (parents obviously survived the famine) Michael in 1852 and Kate in 1849; searched 1837 to 1857.

There may be a list locally as I rememer when I was in Limerick about 5 years ago seeing a list of workhouse people.

If looking for local relatives I suggest you try a private Facebook group on Limerick Genealogy or even a small chance there is a Effin one.

Regards

Pat
