Murthagh of Lisphillip, Elphin Parish

Since I have had poor luck finding family with the name variation of Murtaugh or Murtagh, I decided to search other name variations in Roscommon County. With that, I found a John Murthagh, baptised 21 Feb 1825 in Elphin parish. His father was Patrick Murthagh and his mother was Ellen Egan. IF this is my GGgrandfather, then he fathered my GGrandfather when he was about 19 yrs old. Possible but not super likely. I would like to pursue this avenue of approach and find more records of John Murthagh. If I find a marriage record of this John Murthagh with Mary Flynn (Flinn) then I believe I am onto something.

Hi David, my grandfather's grandfather was James Gervé Conroy, his elder brother John inherited the family farm at Lisphillip/Runnacocka. I have very good genealogical information for my ancestors and some related families, wondering if you have been DNA tested ? My kit is T392867 at GEDMATCH, my father's is M760973, it is only on his great grandfather's side we have the Roscommon ancestry.

Hi David ,

Lisphilip is appx 1 mile from my birth townland . I saw the now Murtagh owner of the farm appx 3 weeks ago , whilst I attended a 50 th memorial service for our Mum . We had a lovely chat & met his grandson . My grand uncle Patrick Shannon married a Bridget Murtagh , also a grand Aunt to the present owner from this family , they emigrated in Aug 1878 to Australia . If you would like further details on this family , ie email , I can certainly make contact as we are in discussions through WhatsApp, I believe his niece or daughter does have a family tree on the Murtagh’s . Look forward to hearing from you .

Una, Thank you for the offer to make contact.  I am really unsure of what little clues are worthy of chasing because I know there are a lot of Murtaghs in Ireland and most are not related to me.  If the family you mentioned knows of a John Murtaugh marriage to Maria Flynn sometime around 1840, then it should be worth following up on.  My immigrant ancestor is James Murtaugh, born about 1844 and came to the US in 1864.  John was a farmer from Roscommon and that is about all I know of him.  He stayed behind while his son James crossed the ocean.

I have right now sent Joe your response , we spoke last night , he is aware of the Conroy’s had his lands some time ago , so I believe we are on the right track , he is going to view his family tree , which he has in a printed format .  I will call him again tonight & come straight back to you .

Take Care . Una
