Moundstown? in Westmeath

The gravestone of my second great grandfather Andrew McGauley, states he was from Moundstown, County Westmeath, Ireland. I find no record of Moundstown in any Townland list. Could it be a local term? Has anyone heard of it?

Thank you!

Jeannine,

There are a number of town lands in Westmeath that begin with the letter M, and end in the word "town". Whomever carved his headstone could have erred or the person providing the information stone could have been mistaken. Do you know his birth year? Or his parents'names?

Regards,

Carolyn

Hi Jennifer

Where did you see the reference to Moundstown for your McGauley ancestor please? Is it only on his headstone? The first place to look would be on the Irish Townlands website. If you can't find it there, I would consider the name of the townland as being wrong.... he knew where he was from but his grieving family may have recalled it incorrectly. It may be something like Monkstown and it sounded like Moundstown??
