Mooney & Doherty Families

DonegalClonmany (Donegal)

Hello,

My 3rd great grandfather, John Mooney, and wife, Eunice Doherty, arrived in the US in 1831, according to naturalizaton records. We cannot locate a passenger list, but assume they arrived in Canada and were first listed as living in Eastport, Maine.

John Mooney was born on 10 July 1803, according to family records (and Naturalization papers) in County Donegal, and my cousin, now deceased, advised the Mooney family resided in Clonmany. Hisdeath record shows a date of death of June 30, 1872 with his parents are listed as Michael and Mary. Eunice (Doherty) Mooney listed her parents as George and Catherine, and was born in 1808.

I am trying to locate their families in Ireland. All records lead to County Donegal! Thanks you, Norma Mooney

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Unfortunately, RC baptismal records for the parish start in 1852 after your ancestors had left Ireland.

I did check the 1827 Tithe listings for Clonmany parish. I did not see a record for a Michael Mooney but there were four records for George Dohertys. As you probably know, Doherty is a very common surname on the Inishowen peninsula.

Here are two links that may be helpful but since your family left almost 180 years ago tracking them will be difficult. The first link is to a Clonmany Genealogy Facebook page run by Jennifer Doherty. The second link is to the Clonmany pairsh page on the Donegal Genealogy web site run by Lindel Buckley.

You may want to add your ancestor stories to our XO Chronicles site https://www.irelandxo.com/ireland-xo/history-and-genealogy/ancestor-dat…

You may also want to consider autosomal DNA testing.

Thank you so much!  I have connected with Jennifer Doherty and did my autosomal testing a few months ago.  Those may lead to some good connections.  I will follow your suggestions.   Here in NH I am starting up an Irish Genealogy Special Interest Group at our local library, to bring folks together who have Irish brick walls to work through. I will also upload my story!  The good news is that I got to meet Francie Mooney and his daughter, Mairead Ni Mhaonaigh at Boston College where they played their fiddles many years ago.  Francie said "oh my dear, we must be related if your GGG-Grandmother was a Doherty!

I attend the Altan concerts and they will be back in our area in March 2018.  I so appreciate your directions and ideas.  It is also about the "journey" of finding more about my family's past.  Thank you,  Norma Mooney Milne

Hi Norma!

I live down in Maryland. You may also want to uploade your raw DNA to Gedmatch which is a volunteer run site where you can see if you match people who tested with other DNA companies (and also loaded their data to Gedmatch).

I'm currently working on adding the Donegal 1901 census online www.leitrim-roscommon.com/1901census About 60% complete.

Hi Norma. John and Eunice are my great grandparents X3 as well. John's parents were Michael Mooney and Mary McLaughlin. Michaels mother and father were Sean Mooney and Rachel McDaid. Sean and Rachel were traced by my cousin to Clonmany. Your great grandfather (George Mooney) and mine  (Hugh Mooney) are brothers. - Kirk Shaw - West Falmouth, MA.

Thanks, Kirk.  This is such exciting news, and I appreciate you reaching out to me.  I wonder if the "cousin" you mention is Jayne Mooney Hammond.  She connected with me 10+ years ago but I have lost her - her phone number was disconnected and my mail was returned.  We meet several times, she & her husband attended a family reunion I held here in NH and then "poof" she disappeared.  Hope we can share our stories soon.  Norma
