Miss

Hello,

I am searching for Margaret Sheehan born in Skibbereen County Cork cc1850.I know nothing of her early life but she ended up married to Michael Carton (McCarton, McCarty etc) and living on a farm in Co Derry in 1901. I have been trying for some years to find her origin and particularly her marriage to Michael (cc 1870/71) but despite employing a researcher at one point I can find no trace of where she was married. The researcher told me that they were not married anywhere in the UK, if at all, she added! However, I do not think the latter a possibility at all. The only marriage I can find of a Michael Carton and Margaret Sheehan took place in Maine US in 1871 but there is no family evidence or story to suggest that they were in the US. Their addresses in the US were given as Buffalo and I have tried the local Irish Ancestry Group in Buffalo without success (they did not reply to my query). My main question is how they came to meet up and be married when Margaret and Michael lived at opposite ends of Ireland. The Researcher did discover that Michael and Margaret lived in Butcher Street Derry before Michael inherited the family farm in Muldonagh. They lived there until they died in the 1920s. To confuse matters Michael and Margaret's son Michael Carton went to the US in the early 1900s and met and married a Mary Welsh from Mayoin Boston. However, they came home eventually and lived in Muldonagh too. I would dearly love to find Margaret's roots in Skibbereen but the number of Sheahans in that area is overwhelming. I have been there twice but to no avail. If you are a Sheahan from Skibbereen please get in touch.

Hello M Brolly,  I looked at www.irishgenealogy.ie for Margaret sheehan born 1850 +-5 years in Skibbereen.  I found four records in 1842, 1846, 1853 and 1856.  Perhaps you should have a look at these and see if they ring any bells.  This is a free government site.

Kind regards,

Hello Anne,

Thank you so much for your very prompt and helpful reply.  I have chosen the 1853 birth as the most likely as it fits in with her age in the 1901 and 1902 censuses and the names of her parents John and Margaret fit in better with her own childrens' names, if I go by the traditional way of naming children in Ireland at that time.  Her eldest child was Margaret and her first son was called after her husband's father James, the second son was called after her husband Michael and the third son was called John which was not a name in her husband's family at that time.  From the link you gave me it does not seem to name the Church where she was baptised, just the Parish, no mother's maiden name and no address except Bridgetown which I gather is a district of Skibbereen.  Have you any suggestions as to what I do or where I go next?  Thank you. Myra

Hello Mbrolly,

I don't really know where to go from here.  I am sending you a link regarding the Skibbereeen (Creagh and Sullion) parish which might explain where the records came from.    http://corkgen.org/publicgenealogy/cork/placesalmanac/skibbereen/

Sorry I can't be of more assistance to you.  Perhaps someone with more knowledge may see your post and help you.
