Minoris Regan

Hello Volunteers,

I have a baptism record from Cootehall, Roscommon for one of my ancestors. Mary Regan was baptized on 6 Dec 1856 to "Minoris" Regan and Eleanor Kelly. Her two siblings' records show their father as Edward Regan and mother, Eleanor Kelly. I also have the 1855 marriage record for Edward and Eleanor. Has anyone ever seen someone referred to as "Minoris"? I am wondering if this is a nickname as we might use the name "Junior" to refer to a male named after their father. A quick Google search says it can be a Latin word for minor, lesser or smaller. Appreciate any feedback.

Regards,

Carolyn

Hi Patricia,

The parish register page of 2.3 MB exceeds the file size for an upload, and my attempts to screenshot just a portion of it and uploading it are coming to naught!

I see on Roots Ireland that his name is translated as Moris too, but the Ancestry translation, and what appears in the church register are both Minoris as there is a letter N before the letter O. Translation aside, my query was if this name of Minoris has been seen in other records.

Thanks,

Carolyn

Hello Carolyn,

Attached is a copy of the original 1856 baptism record for Mariam Regan, daughter of Minoris Regan and Elenoria Kelly. The baptism record is from the National Library of Ireland.

In the right column of the baptism record you'll see the numerals 5 and 0. This means that Mariam's parents donated 5 Shillings and 0 Pence to the Catholic Church for the baptism of their daughter Mariam.

I didn't uncover many records in Ireland for the first name Minoris. I did find at least seven alternate spellings of the name in baptism transcriptions from the Find My Past (FMP) website.

The baptisms took place in several different Irish counties.

The baptism transcriptions, in chronological order by year, follow:

Hi Dave,

Thanks for your very thorough reply! I appreciate your research on my behalf. It looks like this is a name, and not just referring to a junior with a father having the same forename.

Regards,

Carolyn

You're welcome Carolyn, and many thanks for your reply.
